I was lied to. I was in Silver. I've just been reclassified to Bronze.

    Fucking macro game
It was stupid to assume you couldn't be demoted.
What if someone got lucky in his placement matches,
and was placed in Platinum league?

Platinum would be full of noobs if those people couldn't
be demoted. Being a platinum player would have no value.

Either way, this is old news.
I witnessed it myself in a livestream.
LoA & Gifted were Platinum ranked, and after
a string of losses were demoted to Gold.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

    We have a winner!

Although, I'm sure it hurts. There's a certain amount of pride
that comes with being a player in a high league.

All the games worth spectating are silver, gold, or platinum.
I've seen Bronze games. They're not nearly as fun to watch.

Are they fun to play? That is Demo's call.

It would be stupid if you couldn't get a lower rank than the bottom of your league. Just imagine someone not playing several months/years, then going to play again. That would be like hitting a wall of concrete.

I have a friend who fought his way up 400 points to be put in gold. His point value went from 1600 to 1200 and he was put at 9th place in the gold division. He now is consistently losing in gold, rather than consistently winning in silver. If it is going to move you up to the next division, wouldnt it make more sense to start you off at the bottom of that division in the next highest league?

I think this system is a mess

I don't even know why you need leagues. You just need a damn number that positions you among all the other players.

I let my friend play on my account and I dropped from Gold all the way to copper or something. He played and lost 20 games, but now I'm consistently winning. Its a bit too easy for me even.

That was my first impression, but it's really a great thing to be fighting for top spot (or top8 or whatever). It's much more rewarding than playing for the 11,592th spot. Actually I think that divisions shouldn't all be on the same level. Division 1 should be stronger than division 15. And Silver1 should be just below Gold15 for example.

I also think that ELOs shouldn't increase so easily. The average ELO is going up every day. Remove the silly bonus points, or put in decay where it only makes it easier to win back decayed points through bonus points.

The way it is now, if the server's top player took a new account in a few months, it would take him a while to catch up to his old rank, despite his being the best player on the server.

This is actually how I thought the system worked originally, because it makes sense. I was then corrected by my friend on how it actually works and that your division doesnt mean anything toward your skill. I think the best way to work this system would be as follows:

    1) After placement, don't move them out of that league until the season is over.

    2) If they screw off in the placement to get put into a lower league, let them. However, make the matchmaking system learn who they should be playing, and match them up accordingly.

This would make them for example have bronze status and play silver opponents in order to move up the bronze division. They won't be playing bronze opponents and will have to play as hard as if they were in silver.

The point is, try to screw the system and the system screws you... :P

This is a huge problem with matchmaking in Halo. If you truly play your best you'll cap somewhere and really have to improve to advance. However many players simply enjoy headstomping noobs so they lose a bunch so they can de-level. I can see this happening in Starcraft. Some people love competition, others only want to win, no matter how unskilled the opponent. It really makes the game less fun, which is why once you work up into a certain league NOT being able to de-level out of it might be a good idea.

Others only want to win so they purposely lose 20 games so they can win against noobs?

Is that a question for me Pando? If so the answer, at least as far as Halo is involved, is yes. People de-level by losing all the time. If they don't care about their Gamerscore or achievements they will simply start another account so they begin at the bottom.

As far as SC2 goes it's too early to tell how big of a problem this will be. A new account, I think, would require a new game so we'll see far less new account issues, but I could see the same lose to de-level/de-rank thing happening.
