Thread: Your thoughts about defencive buildings

Default Your thoughts about defencive buildings

I'm just wondering what are your thoughts about the defencive buildings in sc2 , the strategy involved with them and their usefulness, basicly your experience with them.

In my experience the only biger problem i have noticed with sc2 is the lack of usefulness of defencive buildings , they are horible . I probaly played about 20 - 25 rts in the past and the defences in sc2 are by far the most useless ones in an rts i've ever played in my life.

For me the game feels dumbed down because of that , since a lot of strategy and options are dismished becasuse of that. It realy limits your strategy.
I feel that they should atleast be somewhat more viable early game (if you decide to tech or to expand).

What are your thoughts about them , and experience from using them?

Add another choice in the poll.

Photon canons, walking sunkens, turret and bunkers again? what else?

Make base defenses viable and new as well. Give us new types of base defenses like a floating canons, terran ION canon, AOE base defenses, tier 3 base defenses, and so on.

Planetary fortress is ok. But what about the toss and zerg. Still photon canons and sunken, and there are plenty of new units now that will make both base defenses even more useless.

    Bunkers = great
Cannons = Just as good as they've always been, just remember to double pylon
Spine Crawlers, there good because you can move them - but they are probably the worst - still somewhat useful though.
Planentary Fortress - Amazing, should always use on your third base, or yellow minerals.

I see people placing 2 cannons at a expo, and then getting mad because those 2 cannons didn't do well vs the entire army of the enemy! Please remember the main purpose for static defense is to prevent harassment, and early attacks! Just like in sc1 if you want a decent defense you'll need to make 6-10 cannons at a base thats very ahrd to defend. But if your worried about hellion runbys or something or muta harassment 2-3 cannons are just fine.

No one remembers to bring scvs on there attacks, seriously planting down a few bunkers and missile turrets are very useful! As a bonus you can salvage and move your push to a new location. Lot of times terran move out mid game to attack the zerg, the main purpose of this attack is to force a reaction - and start your third base! You don't need to suicide into there natrual expo- build some bunkers outside there base and attack there secondary bases forcing them to come to your bunkers.

I think it will take awhile for the static defense to become "awesome". Once people realize what timing they need them and how many I think everything will be ok.

Terran defences are strong. but take time effort and even tech to make full use of. missile turrets may be a little over the top but generally i like the state of terran defences.

Islandsnake speaks the truth, defensive structures are anti-harassment, but also, they are support for a defending army; they all have long range and none of them have neglectable fire-power... the defences are rarely worth to mass, but if you have e them in the right places, they can make an important difference at important times; if you have some suitable units there to take hits, they will keep on lending supporting fire throughout the battle. needless to say, they are especially good at supporting around choke-points or when the enemy's numbers are limited for other reasons. just dont expect them to win you the game: if youre relying that heavily on STATIC defences you will lose economically anyway, since youre letting go of controlling the map completely & allowing any opponent with half a brain to expand more & faster than you do while maintaining a more powerful standing army than you.

ofcoruse, some units plain CRUSH static defenses, so you should look out for that aswell.

    peace.

I pity any fellow P building cannons anywhere but behind his mineral lines. Cause I WILL chew through them with my Immortals.

Oh DemoSquid... while I agree with you... I still firmly believe in the obligatory "I hate DTs" sacrificial cannon in the front. It's so useful/useless at the same time!!

Quite simply, Observers are the better detector in every single way.

Well as Zerg I find the spine crawlers invaluablein ZvZ. They pwn Roaches! And since I usually have way too many minerals, I only need a few Roaches, combined with Spine Crawlers to hold off the inevitable mass Roaches attack. Spore crawlers, combined with Hydras also do a decent job against Mutalisks. On their own, base defences do suck, but when used in unison with your units they can make your base a veritable fortress and the enemy lose much more mineral/vespene value in troops than you yourself will.

i can see why alot of people think its useless but 1 out of 50 games i bet it comes in handy, and just tossing extra variables like that make a game more fun, I like having a Unit Posted there, if not a setup
