Thread: Siege Tanks?

Tanks are cavalry and artillery in one unit; when you are able to predict enemy movement and take position to face it in an optimal way, it makes sense to use them as artillery... in many less predictable situations there isnt time to seige up / spacing to make use of the range / clusters of enemies as optimal targts for the splash. sometimes your fighting while on the move, be it forward or backward, to improve your tactical position, be it offensively or defensively.

i do think the current tank mode seems sufficiently strong, its just that many players are used to the superiority of the seige mode,. they may seige up because its the easy way out, or because it seems the safest; they'll more often deem it safer now that they dont quite have a grasp on the game dynamics; not as able to predict the battles outcome at a glance as they were in sc/bw

possibly the marauder is a bit strong vs armored atm, taking stim into account, if that is so, it may overshadow the tankmode a bit. but idk.

... i think we'll see more and more use of tank mode. i think it'll be good. all good.

I still find siege tanks quite effective in TvT but that's the only matchup that I'd use them.

why is that? you dont find them suefull vs hydras? do you like it like that or would you like to see tweaks or a shift in the game somehow to make yuo consider usign them in otehr MU's `?

I seriously doubt that,i used them in Tank mode only when i'm completly in control of the game,or after i have destroyed his army and pushing into his base,By the official realese you will see that there will be definetly some drastic changes regarding the tank...

I admit that this was a really weak post so here it goes:

Against Z, I usually use my factories for hellions so I build reactors to pop out even more hellions. Having to chose between more hellions or siege tanks (so tehc lab vs reactor), I'd go with the hellions because I can easily move them around and still deal a good amount of DPS in a decent AoE. On the other hand, tanks are too slow for the fast confrontations I usually have with Zerg players.

I also use my gas for medivac/marauders/infantry upgrades (occasionally I'll also have the time to go to raven for some HSM but that's rare cases). That doesn't leave much gas left for anything else usually.

The only real time I'd consider using tanks in TvZ is if the zerg would be turtling like crazy with spine crawlers everywhere. Since that doesn't happen a lot...

I'm not really sure if I like it this way or not yet. I really hated playing TvP in SC1 so in one way, I'm kinda glad that the tanks took a back step to let some more room for "A move" units. Tank + vulture micro in SC1 was really too hardcore even though it was still fun.

What they could do to make the tank more viable in SC2 is to make him able to siege/unsiege faster. This could be an upgrade or something. If the unit would be faster then I'm sure that it could have a better place in TvZ.

i understand the reactor vs techlab / helion vs ST dynamic of it, and your bias towards spending your gas on infantery. but taking that vs zerg MU for example, couldnt you sometimes benefit from scaling down on your marauder producitona bit to add in a tank or two . only to use the seige mode occasionally; if you prefer the mobility use the tank mode. i guess it would mean less dps for the gas spent than you'd get for marauders, but the range matters. //theorycraft

I wish the siege tank had at least 2 armor in tank mode (unlocked).

This could be the very solution to the Siege Tank! Everything in StarCraft II is faster than it was in SC1. the buildings lift off, and such! so if the Crucio Siege Tank is supposed to be an improvement over the old Arclite Siege Tank, I think it should fix it's worse problem! How darn slow it took it to transform back and forth from Siege mode to Tank Mode!

Oh yeah. Make powerful unit closer to the imba state. Reduce the strategical depth of Tank usage.
Crucio already moves much faster and shoots faster while mobile. WHAT else do you need?! Mobile Siege mode?

Moves much faster? Are you crazy? Movespeed is the same or probably slower, It only shoots slightly faster but the speed is still 'normal'....And there's no point in arguing about Tank mode,it is clear that siege mode is the one prefered...
