Thread: I really wish ...

Also, there is no telling if Blizzard would shut such a project down or not.
    Yes there is. They wouldn't.

I'm sure within a couple months of the game release you'll see essentially the Original campaigns available.
It's going to depend. If people need to make up art for say, Dugalle or Stukov or Duke or something, it's going to take significantly longer than that.

You have absolutely no way of knowing that.

    Yes I do.

They never shut down any attempts to recreate WC1 or 2 using the WC3 engine.

Honestly, why the hell would they shut down somebody USING THEIR MAP EDITOR? That's why they release the damn thing.

They don't release it for you to do whatever you want without limit. Which is why there is a EULA before you first launch the editor.

I'm not saying they WILL, I'm saying you can't rule it out unless Blizzard says otherwise.

And you're talking attempts, have any of those ever gotten to a finished state and released? I'm not talking buggy half working mid-development versions.

Okay, fine, it's a possibility. But it's really unlikely.

No, but they still never shut them down. The only real reason I could see for why they would shut down an SC remake and not a WC1/2 remake in WC3 is that someone remaking SC1 would probably use more of the in-game resources like the sounds and the map design. They might not like that, I guess. But I mean if they're not selling the maps for profit, I don't see why Blizzard would care.

So it's still really, really unlikely.

Never said it was very likely, I just said it is possible. We all know how unpredictable Blizzard can be.

And this is why I think its more likely than you think. These things would have to be packaged with the map. If the person doesn't own StarCraft 1 this would be seen as copyright infringement, and since (I assume) there is no way to check for a StarCraft CD in the drive, it would therefore be impossible without infringing. It could possibly even hurt some SC1 sales if people who hadn't played the first one knew there was a mod out for SC2 that they could use to catch up on the story of SC1.

I wasn't referring to campaigns, just the original SC1 Melee mode. It won't take very long for people to create custom maps with all the original units and buildings with original stats, abilities, and game mechanics.

Sure, the engine is different so you won't have the same micro tactics, but it will still be fun to play if not competitively.

Exactly. It's really just about the novelty of playing the old missions with the new engine - the original SC1 missions weren't too tough, but I thought the BW missions were actually pretty good - even by today's standards. While I'm pretty terrible at Zerg, I thought scenarios like, 'True Colors' and 'Drawing of the Web' made for really great missions - It would be a blast to play updates of those in particular....especially now that the in-game characters and cinematics are so much more detailed -

    That's what I meant.

I agree with Aldrius - Blizzard are friendly towards such mods (or maps), I doubt they'll try to go against the community and stop those remakes.

And of course, such a remake is just for fun.
It'll be impossible to give us the same SC1 feeling in the new engine with all the feature, so a remake will just remind of us of the old campaign, and will never be a real remake of the whole SC1.
