Default Comparison of SC2 voice over to SC1 voice over

After playing a while, your brain starts getting used to mediocrity. For a while I thought, hey these sounds are "acceptable"... until I listened to SC1.

    I was shocked:

In all honesty. The StarCraft 1 unit voices are not as amazing as you make them out to be. They are filled with nostalgia. Are some of them better? Sure. But some of the SC2 ones are better than the SC1 voices.

Care to point out which ones? None of the zerg are anywhere close to the original. Terran, *maybe* the marine. Ghost feels weak (as if he's depressed or something). Protoss, very big fail everywhere other than... dark templar.

I have to say there's no discernable difference between the SC1 and SC2 Zealot. Yes, they sound different due to different filters. However, their intensity is about the same. The main difference between them is that the SC2's lines are much, much clearer and easier to understand.

Actually I have to say, I rather like all of the Terran/Protoss clips. However, I do agree that Zerg sound...odd.

Some voices are better in SC1; in all honesty though, most people are complaining out of nostalgia. SC1 has a clear case of what I call "90s game syndrome," in which the sounds are very clear and vibrant, but the quality itself has that cheapy, arcade-like feel. SC2 sounds different, sure, and some of the lines are quite awful, but the voice acting itself isn't as big a step down as many people are claiming. On the whole, the SC2 sounds are more immersive and realistic.

yeah, the problem in my opinion with protoss voices is that with the new filters or sounds effects they are clearer than in sc1, so they sound different, in my opinion they sound "more human" than the old voices.

i like the terrans voices, i think that the only problem i have is with the tank and bc. the only way i can describe it is like they dont talk with enough "balls"... you know... that action-heroe-macho-of-the-week-army-badass-commander type of voice.

Am I the only one in favor of the Zerg's new direction? I always thought the old ones sounded too robotic for them. The new voices sound a lot more bestial than those of SC1 (which really sound like they were made by machines).

I actually prefer a lot of the old Zerg voices .

The new voices just don't sound as distinct. In SC1, it's a lot easier to learn what a Mutalisk, Guardian, Ultralisk, etc all sound like. In SC2, it actually took me a while to distinguish that Mutalisk screech, which is important since I need to know when they finish building.

I do, however, like the Hydralisk, Zergling, and Roach. I think they possibly have the most readily-identifiable sound effects.
