Assuming that the abilities don't change, you gotta take into account the thing still cloaks buildings, which is insane and something the arbiter didn't do. Its vortex is also WAY more powerful than Stasis field, since it can block off areas. I would still prefer having the Mothership over the arbiter even if that wasn't the case, for the same reason I would prefer stalkers, Broodlords, Thors, etc (its new). It emphasizes the whole 'less units' theme of the Protoss.
But I'm almost positive the Mothership is going to change a dozen more times.
Prior to the patch, I watched a video of someone doing a Mothership rush. It was overpowered. It still might be - you don't have to research anything. But I'll leave the balancing up to the Blizzard.

I'd like it if no Arbiters(the lore excuse actually makes sense in that regard because of the Judicators probably being wiped out in the Civil War) came back, and just have a new support class takes it place if the Mothership is too hard to balance. The Mothership after all, needs its rightful place in Single player so they can really overpower it. If they can find something unique, original, and balanced for the Mothership, I'm fine with it.

You can only have one. It shoots lots of things. It's different enough from an arbiter in that sense, and I prefer that. The arbiter had its run, the mothership is an interesting successor. It ain't perfect, but at least it's something.

I don't care if the abilities are similar. It's not what makes the unit. You can't just look at a dark fizzy drink and say 'it's coke'. It's about the Mothership as an entire package.
Being a unique unit changes the way you use this compared to making 2-3 arbiters back in SC1. The unique unit dynamic on top of cloaking field makes the mothership more interesting. Players have to be more careful in using this, and it becomes a bigger 'WHOA!' factor if you manage to keep it alive or it gets taken out. It's not as easily replaced like any other unit in the game, and that's what makes it special.

Well the way I see it
Mothership with unique spells is Much better than Fat Arbiter Mothership
Fat Arbiter Mothership is slightly better than the Arbiter
So I am disappointed with the Fat Arbiter Mothership... but I'm not going to go sour grapes and say the Arbiter itself would actually be better.
