Thread: Merc Compound?

I don't mind Reapers just requiring Tech Lab, they are best used early game. Its the damn D8's that are the killer. Make D8 an upgrade that requires Factory. That's all I ask.

It would take too much to add such a feature to SC2 at this point in its development, but I always liked the added strategic depth (and flavor) that mercenary camps added in WC3, and I think it could work as an added element of one of the SC2 expansions.
I think the Merc Compound already does this in the campaign. Raynor can hire elite mercenaries which he can then build via the Merc Compound.

As for neutral mercenaries in the game, they wouldn't need to be a new race or restricted to Terran mercenaries. They can simply be a neutral faction comprised of Terran and Protoss mercenaries who also supply 'enslaved' Zerg units.

Enslaved Zerg units would have to be like the lobotomized ones from Frontline. From a lore perspective, Protoss mercenaries don't make much sense after Auir being taken.

The mercenary compound was a bar, which didn't really fit well with the other war buildings. If they require a building, they should require something else. It is a good idea to change the name, also, because the Reapers aren't supposed to be mercenaries, according to the official page.

I think they used the mercenary idea back in the time when you got 3 Reapers and had to wait a cooldown to get 3 more, but then that was changed, and the mercenary idea wasn't necessary.

Did you know that the Merc Compound had a redesign? It hasn't been a bar for a LONG time

Lorewise it would be fairly difficult to justify (in general), that's true.

Don't worry guys, I'm here. Finally started playing a little of the beta. A bit laggy, so I'm sticking with computer games for a while. Unlike the other staff, who are too busy to even reply to a PM, I'm here.

I believe the Merc Compound is sticking with single-player. I just played as Terran, and the only pre-requisite for the reapers are the barracks with an attached tech lab. Although the Merc Compound used to be used as a pre-requisite for reapers, it isn't anymore, and only serves as the building to build your hired mercenary units in the single-player.

When? What it was modified to look like?

Why not? We know in WoL that Raynor does fight against Protoss fanatics who aren't aligned with those on Shakuras. If such splinter groups can exist, why not some more enterprising ones?

They are fanatics loyal to Ulrezaj, not some thugs looking for money. In fact, there are no Protoss thugs for there to be mercenaries. Don't make Blizzard mess up the lore in such a way, I will not stand it if they treat it as Warcraft lore.
