Thread: Explaination of Divisions?

    Default Explaination of Divisions?

Sorry if it was posted before, maybe it was but I never understood it 100%..

So in the Platinum, theres like Division 1, Division 2, etc..

Is Platinum Division 1 like the ABSOLUTE TOP level? Or is it the opposite way, like Division 9 or whatever, the absolute top??

I noticed many more skilled players in the lower divisions like Div 1, Div 2, Div 3, etc.. but then you see that Davyie is in Div 4, and he should be #1 right now with his win percentage.. so it confuses me..

    Don't take me for 100% but;

I think the Division number is simply a number labeling that set of 100 Players, not necessarily dictating their skill level.

Then after a few weeks, the top players from each division go into a tournament of some sorts I think. The top 8 slots are reserved for tournament play.

Actualy you misunderstand the top 8 part, the top 8 players are able top play people from their bracket and also the bracket that is a skill higher. So if you are in the top 8 of the gold league , you can also play against the platinium league players , and if you do good, you are promoted to a higher skill bracket.

basically it is Blizzard's way of trying to keep players in the same skill bracket. I don't know the order per say, but according to Mr.Browder, rank 30 out of 100 is better then rank 927394729342947927 out of 19874293749238749827349723948729847
Guess its not a good day to be a bad guy huh skank!?

Im not confused at all of the Gold and Platinum and stuff.. its all the DIVISIONS within PLATINUM itself.

thats the only confusing part. Its pretty obvious that theres a difference between gold and platinum.

    Explanation:

League: I portion of the playerbase that is deemed to be "about the same skill". Leagues as I understand them are Platinum -> Gold -> Silver -> Copper -> Practice. Another League is Professional but I understand that you have to be "injected" into that one by an esports organization. Basically, sponsorship.

Mentality: The idea is that people within the same skillset (league) should play other people of the same skillset (league). when you join a random game, you play ANYONE in your league. They felt there was a major flaw for people in previous B.net, as there would be about 4 servers with 30,000+ people vying for 32 spots, including amateurs and professionals. You don't see this in real sports. If you go to the bowling alley nearby, you play against other amateurs in some form in that and don't have to worry about a professional just owning the group. Likewise, professionals don't have to worry about earning "empty wins".

Divisions: With the mentality previously, a division is not related to skill whatsoever. It's merely a "container" of people who are going to be competing for the top 8 slots. Those in the top 8 slots will play in a tounament at the end of a season. The winner of that tournament will be a "division champion". This means that Copper league Division 8 has just as much a chance to "succeed" as Platinum League 128. Instead of fighting against 10s of thousands.. you're fighting against 100 other players of likewise skill... and have a chance to suceed.

    An analogy:

    LEAGUES:
Kids in little league baseball can still win the tournament.
Amateur community leagues baseball can win the tournament.
College baseball can still win the tournament.
Professional baseball can still win the world series.

    DIVISIONS:
You walk down your street, sign up for a bowling tournament.. it's considered "amateur level".
Joe drives 40 miles east, signs up for a bowling tournament, it's different than the previous one and is considered "amateur level"
Bob drives 100 miles north, signs up for a bowling tournament, it's different than the previous two. It's considered "amateur level"
3 different tournaments, 3 different collection of people, all the same skill level.

I hope this explanation gives the full answer.

Also promotions seem to be every week, as Blizzard employees have a note next to their name that has their rank from last week, where as all of us have a "joined this week" thing.

Weekly promotions from within the division? Or do you mean a weekly possibility of going from silver to gold?

I think the latter. I am just guessing, it might just be that it examines where everyone is every week and promotions are at set times.
