Thread: Anyone Else excited to hear the new Music?

    Some thoughts on music...

Orchestral music does very much fit the Terran, if it is specifically an old-fashioned military march (like the new Terran theme in Brood War). And just like in Brood War, it has to complement the story in some way. And (just like in Brood War again), orchestral and electronic tracks are not mutually exclusive.

For the Zerg the important points to keep in mind are:
    a) The melody has at times to give the effect of swarming insects, burgeoning activity going on.
    b) Vaguely Middle-Eastern and Tribal elements are most fitting
    c) Has to be aggressive
    d) Some of the more exotic, otherworldly female vocals from the Echoes of War Zerg track would be most welcome, I think. Again, a somewhat Middle-Eastern/Tribal vibe.

As for the Protoss, well... It has to be tragic and sombre and subtle (and heroic!). Really a question of hitting the right tone rather than specific style.

I always liked the USA theme from Generals - I thought it had a 'Terran' feel to it.

Personally I like orchestrated music but what I heard so far is kinda disappointing (echoes of war and artwork trailer music) and really not fitting. Also, I'm not a fan of the soundtracks that Blizzard made after Starcraft (diablo 2, warcraft 3, WoW). It's really their new approach to music that I don't like (more ambient and less melodic). Their main reason, as stated by Browder and Sigaty in an interview, is that melodic music takes aways the player's concentration from the game. Though it is true at the beginning, it doesn't take your focus away that much unless you have an attention deficit problem and honestly, after a few games or a few minutes in the game, this isn't true anymore. It's really disappointing to see that they won't produce stuff like Warcraft 2 ost anymore which is, imo, a masterpiece. Even more so considering that it's a MIDI "synthesized crap" (with real instruments this would have been godly).

Anyways, with all that said, I'd rather see them take the same approach they took with Starcraft 1 for number 2's music. SC OST was kinda a hybrid between ambient and melodic music but it really succeeded in illustrating each races through music.

how about the sc2 tychus opening cinematic background music? is that sc2 music as well? i like the sound of it for the terran.

I say give the terran some badass catchy epic music like this which is very recognizable and very familiar.

The theme music you're listening to isn't the actual in-game music during standard play.

Nah, I don't think that music has anything to do with the game, and I for one would prefer something more in line with the original StarCraft's music (performed by live instruments of course) rather than the tired industry standard of ambiance.

Now, Company of Heroes goes from a relatively harmless melody to a sudden roar of instrumental delight once combat begins. And that rocks.

I think Blizzard will do the right thing with the Starcraft 2 soundtrack. The whole Echos of War thing they did was just their way of showcasing some of their classic tracks in a more broad horizon. A lot of gaming companies have done this in the past (Squaresoft, and Nintendo being the first that come to mind) and have sold out arenas.

As long as the music matches the unique vibe of the race you are playing. And I fully trust Blizzard's ability to present us with a glorious soundtrack for Starcraft 2. I personally forecast a jack-of-all trades usage of choir, chorus, synthetics, and classical means of assembling a score for the game. It is all about the context of which it is used. I highly doubt they will make an orcastrated Zerg theme. And I highly doubt they will spend the money necessary to record anything that consists of more then a handful of composers and song writers, but I might be wrong there.
Guess its not a good day to be a bad guy huh skank!?

i don't find the orchestral pieces people have been linking very interesting, i hope blizzard keep the genre approach they used in sc1 for the music so it all sounds unique
