From personal experience, I waited on every tidbit of news for Diablo 2. Anticipating the weekly screenshots, news on the beta, and constantly refreshing Dii.net for news. Once I got into the open beta, I quickly installed the game, and was very very disappointed.
The game itself was really good, but I'd hyped myself for something mindblowing amazing. My expectations bit me in the ass. Over time, I began to appreciate D2 for what it was, but it never came close to what I expected it to be (which was basically WoW: teamwork + quests + awesome boss fights)
That's a result of self-hype. Your expectations become so high that no matter how good the game is, it just doesn't meet your expectations. There's really no gauge to 'awesomeness' other than personal opinion.
