And looks different from the in-game model. Let's be honest, most SC1 cinematics/art look completely different from in-game models, including the SC1 intro cinematic ship that isn't ever seen again, and the strange Zerg and rocket Terran unit in BW intro.

This was never meant to be a siege tank.

Thats one of the things that I loved about the cinematic art is that it was so different. It helped the single player feel like an larger universe where technology that wasn't accessible to the player still existed. It brought a great feel to the story and an extra level of depth. At least thats how it came across to me anyway.
In sc2 it seems they are bridging the gap between what we see in game and the cinimatics. Very cool IMO. (talking about single player mode where you walk around the Hyperion. The new Tychus Findlay in game model looks pretty dam close to the cinematic one. Even the low poly in game model of Zeratul on sc2's hero page looks insanely close to the high rez one. kudos to blizz on this one!)
I'm not really sure why they decided to keep the tempest model for the carrier, they could have and should have for sure remade it. I loved the design as the TEMPEST but not as the carrier model. I want my flying banana of death back. Also I want them actually useful in a game for once. Is that too much to ask for SC2?

Looks nice and epic and all. Why?Heres a 3d rendition of the Sc1 Carrier
Because you're seeing it from below. One thing you can learn from watching anime is that low-angle shots make everything look better.
The in-game Carrier has to look good when viewed from above. And it has to look good when viewed from above from far away.
Also, that Carrier model is not the same one they used in the game. You don't have the... whatever it is dropping off of the bottom of it. And so on.

the new carrier looks more like the cinematic from sc1. it's like they kept the hull of the cinematic carrier and added loops on the side.
the reason the old carrier looks better to me is because it has that sting ray car sleek design feel to it. the strips between the top hull plate and the side hull plates made it look like a whales mouth turning the whole thing into a whale head. the things on the side it's flippers.
edit
i drew this a long long long long time ago to show my love for the carrier.
