How about the simplest answer. Blizzard is prepping 1000 servers for either battle net 2.0 or for the horde of people downloading the beta client.

1000 servers sounds like an awful lot for a beta prep. On the other hand, that many servers and more might be needed if there's some sort of WoW -> Battle.net 2.0 integration going on.
