Well, if you look at the original Zealot concept art, you can see that the crest was part of the Protoss' design from the get go. The 'conehead' version that we see in the game is thus likely a result of Blizzard's inability to succesfully create the crest with the technology back then.

Their wasnt crest technology in 1998? This reminds me of the "There wasnt infinite unit selection technology in 1998" conspiracy

As a 3D artist I can tell you 100% I am limited by technology. Some programs have been developed that allow the artist to overcome certain obstacles. When you speak of 3d art technology is directly related to how far you can push it. I wont pretend for a second to know anything about blizzard's workflow but I can tell you that creating a high poly model and then building the low rez cage around it is far easier now then it has ever been. (Speaking of unit portraits and such) I'm also not saying that they couldn't manage to create the crest with the amount of polygons they had available to them (even for prerendered images/cutscenes) but that it might have looked incredibly retarded and therefore was dropped. Of course this is pure speculation. Also remember that even in pre-rendered animation for sc1 that there would have been a poly limit they might have run up against for render times or even the amount of ram they would need. (I ran into not having enough ram to render 2 scenes out of my demo reel and either had to drop some poly's/split the scene into passes or buy more ram.)

Yes but the hyrdalisk had crest technology (quite a nice one in fact)

I think the much more likely explaination is that they decided to change the art direction which you are allowed to do in a sequel.

On the other hand, I always wondered how the original species that the zergs assimilated looked like. The dunerunner, the brontolith, the manthis screamer. All of them. Maybe they can show as creeps dont u think????
Oh yes. Because bamboos and lemurs with two extra hands are sooo imaginative. And mixes of different terran(as in the technical meaning of the word) species was so creative. And giving every other animal either two extra legs or two extra eyes, or adding gills and insect-like features -- oh yes, Avatar was soooo original. [/sarcasm]

And no way in hell do I want the Bengalass looking like that butt-ugly Thanator. The bengalass looks good enough. The Kakaru was less creative than the *their names escape me* dragon things, being a four-winged alien pterosaur, but it at least looks natural, like as if someone didn't just drop some mistake of a creation on some random planet. We don't have to change the original critters, maybe have other species under the same family, and please don't copy anything from Avatar except for maybe than Trudy's quotes for, as someone had said, the Banshee.

Although I would like to see the creatures the Zerg had assimilated. And assuming they're all extinct because of that, maybe in the Zerg campaign there will be a part where the player can examine all the DNA strains of the Zerg bla bla blah.

Actually I just realized something. I found some images I had long forgotten about. They completely destroy my speculation and make me feel like a bit of a doofus but I don't care too much. :P Live and learn right?

My original point was just that the ability to build detail into characters has come a long way since starcraft 1. But it seems like blizzard hasn't really changed much at all. They are just able to put more detail into the designs they already established in sc1.

For example. Selendis doesn't have the head crest but instead above the eyes has a smooth transition akin to the older protoss renders from the score screen of sc1 like archer posted. Artanis has something closer to the rigid headcrest too. It just seems like in SC2 they are pushing certain features that were once subtle to add more character. Also in the 3rd book of the Dark Templar Saga there is a part that describes a distinct physical difference between Dark Templar and Auir protoss. It states that the Dark Templar have a lot more spikes, scratches and bumps like the ones shown below. So it seems that there always have been different kinds of Protoss faces and now they took what was once subtle and pushed it farther. Anyway thats my take on it. Could be wrong again though :P

Selendis definatly has a bone crest, you can see the double ridge.

Because protoss don't have mouths, ears and noses there isn't much that differentiates their looks but cones, crests, skin texure, skin color and eye glow. Plus, we have yet to see chubby/chubby-faced protoss.. they all seem to be so slim. I bet they deliberately made some with crests and others without.

Hey after seeing all those lookalikes that are simply "paying homage" to some movie I remembered this one!

About Bengalaas making them similar would be cool as long as they're kept four legged
