Thread: StarCraft 2 Balance Team is...

Default StarCraft 2 Balance Team is...

Via Twitter ~ 12 hours ago.

The #StarCraft2 balance team has worked on giving the corruptor and void ray more of a defined role in games.
Are the corruptor and void ray really two units that need a more defined role (especially the Corruptor being the Zerg's only AA), or are there some other ones that could use some work first?

I've read this somewhere already......I can't think of where......
I think it was in a random thread with a different topic.

Anyway, the Corruptor I can understand a bit, but the Void Ray? I thought its workings already gave it a clearly defined role.

Read the statement again. It isn't "more of a defined role in the game;" it's "more of a defined role in games." This is theory vs. practice here.

Take the Corruptor. If nobody goes for air, it's worthless. It has some utility vs. Zerg, due to having Overlords about, but Mutalisks are quite capable against targets that can't shoot back, just as cheap, and can also attack ground targets.

This is mitigated somewhat in that Corruptors come from the Spire now, just like Mutas. So if you can get Mutas, you can get Corruptors.

The Void Ray is a different matter. I would guess that, in practice, it's simply not turning out to be cost efficient to produce. They're undeniably useful. But it takes an out-of-the-way building to make them (StarGates), you can't use your existing infrastructure to produce them, and they're not exactly cheap. In short, you might want them, but you don't want to pay for getting them.

Or perhaps it is a window-of-opportunity issue, where they become progressively less useful (due to the prevalence of countering units).

In any case, Blizzard are the ones with the game. They're the ones playing it. So they're the ones most likely to see these kinds of balance issues.

Good to see they're addressing the Corruptors, I always thought they needed more punch.

I still prefer the Scourge, since they were a very unique and versatile unit for the Zerg. They complimented the Mutalisk very well too, Scourge being great AA specialists while Mutas were more of a generalist. They feel more threatening than Corruptors.

I thought the only problem was quality. Beta is supposed to solve that kind of problem.

What if the corruptors, instead of turning into turrets the Air units they destroy, create a single Scourge from the destroyed unit... The brood Lord shoots Mantalings, while the corruptor creates scourge. Air and ground pwnage.

It's still a gimmick of the Corruptor that prevents it from having high up-front damage, which I would rather have on a specialist unit. It's sort of the same with the Warp Ray's slow ramp up in damage, it makes it difficult to be an immediate anti-heavy unit counter if it can only create the thick beam after ~2-3 seconds of attack. Think of using these to counter 6+ Battlecruisers, that's a lot of wasted time with the rampup while you're being bombarded by attacks and potentially plasma torps. How are Corruptors to do the same if a part of their DPS comes from the turret and it takes a long time to kill something like a BC?

The things Corruptor would be best used against are weak air units since they would create more turrets faster (or scourge in your idea). But if you were attacking many capital ships, you're only able to kill one at a time slowly, and creating one set of turrets/scourge at a time. On top of that, 1/3 of the units it counters are AtA as well. Creating scourge through unit death is not a practical solution for AA, you need to be able to control their creation.
