I wish I hadn't entered this topic yet, I've already spoiled the whole movie for myself. Damn my curiosity!

lol I had put that in the title so that people could talk about it.

I'm trying to figure out if this movie was totally made up or if it actually follows one of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. Even if it doesn't, I'd say it was fairly faithful to the style. Plus, with the presence of Moriarty, I'd say they're setting themselves up for a pretty sweet sequel.

I never ever touched a SH book but that movie was cool. My gf didn't want to go see Avatar so we ended up seeing this instead and I'm really glad I did.

I haven't seen it yet, and I don't plan to. Based on the trailers alone I can tell you it is far too physical for true Sherlock Holmes fans, which I consider myself. (Also, as much as I enjoyed the Jr. in Iron Man, he's about five feet too short to be Sherlock Holmes, who looked even taller than his stated 6 feet because he was so thin). If you tell me the story I can tell you which, if any, of the Holmes stories it follows. The main one about coming back from the dead doesn't ring any bells at the moment.

Glad you guys enjoyed it, but there's no way in Hades I'll be watching it.

I saw it tonight with my friends, and was thoroughly pleased. My favorite scene centers around the cage match, where Holmes systematically inflicts blows against parts of his opponent's body. In the end: "Capacity to spit at the back of head: neutralized."

I like that Watson is portrayed more as an intelligent character and accomplished detective in his own right, too.

EDIT Random film-nut trivia. I thought Lord Blackwood looked a lot like a young Peter Cushing, who resembled and acted with a young Christopher Lee, who I learned played Holmes in several films.

While I'm not at all a Sherlock Holmes fan, I do get a similar feel based on the trailers.

It just looks too much like the typical "americanized action-comedy version" of a non-american character.
While I found the comedy twist in the trailer funny, the "american styled action" is just not what I associate with Sherlock Holmes.

But for the comedy - Definately a DVD buy for me at some point though.

I saw this last night. Now I would consider myself and avid fan of the true Sherlock Holmes. IMO this movie was okay - but it certainly wasn't "Sherlock Holmes". It was too comedic - not enough manic depressive brilliance, etc etc. It was decent for what it was - a classic washed by the American $$$ machine. With that being said - I don't like Jude Law and while I generally like Rachel McAdams - I don't think she could keep up with Downey's better than average acting.

As for Xyvik's comment about it being to physical - if we're going strictly from the stories - yes. But Doyle often commented that if Holmes hadn't been a detective he would have been a boxer Also wth was Mycroft? haha I love that guy.
