The movie is amazing! A must see.
There are even some connexions with StarCraft (no, I don't mean the Banshees, no they're not infuriating rip-offs, they're subtle and of the visual and thematic kind). So go see it.
Oh, and the 3D is not distracting at all, it's surprisingly subtle and enhances the visuals just right.

I watched Avatar last night — in 2D. I thought it was pretty good. One particularly nice thing about it is that it wasn't made for the sole purpose of showing off 3D effects. It was a normal movie enhanced with 3D, rather than totally centered around 3D. The plot was of the "natives-getting-run-out-of-their-home-by-a-bunch-of-greedy-prospectors-until-guy-switches-sides-to-save-the-natives" type. There was also a nice amount of the "save-the-green-living-stuff" message, but not too much.
Another nice thing was that the movie never left anything unexplained. They used all 160 minutes to properly detail the story instead of trying to cram everything into less than 120 minutes. Stuff was usually alluded to before you actually saw it, that way when it came around again, you were like, "Oh yeah, that's that important thing they showed a good while ago."
So yeah, it wasn't the most awesome movie in the world, but it didn't suck like half the crap most movie makers have been shooting out at the masses for a quick buck. It was a nice, well balanced movie. 4.25/5
