Thread: What is wiping out the protoss

Default What is wiping out the protoss

When Dustin Browder was asked about Legacy of the Void, he had this to say:

    Source: http://www.destructoid.com/destructo...r-137841.phtml

he Protoss are sort of a troubled species. They're being systematically exterminated, and were being exterminated long before the Zerg arrived. They were starting to die out from their sheer age, but now that the Zerg came and their home world is gone, these guys are really having a lot of trouble.
They've been beaten down by the brutality of the StarCraft universe but in Legacy of the Void, something even worse happens and annihilation is coming. Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61P0UBqRNQo

Perhaps he didn't mean "exterminated" when he said this. Maybe their death rate is higher than or equal to their birth rate, such that when one of them gets killed for whatever reason they can't make up for that loss.

If he does mean "exterminated" though, could it be Duran's or another servant's work? I doubt that Duran just "popped on the scene" when SC began. What was he doing before SC? Maybe before the Zerg arrived he was busy exterminating Protoss in order to pave the way, which would explain why he's there in the first place.

This is interesting. I wonder if he might have been referring to the Dark Templar being exterminated by their Khalai brethren? Doesn't sound like it, though.

Concerning the Protoss, they've been in a continual state of war since their very inception at the hand of the Xel'Naga, from the Aeon of Strife to the internecine leading to the Dark Templar exodus. Plus I remember someone saying mysterious psionic storms ravaged Aiur, forcing the Protoss to return from their many colonies to Aiur, this being one reason the many Motherships are left scattered and abandoned through out the cosmos.

Browder's comments on the Protoss campaign starts at 5:00.

The writers like being tough on the Protoss, don't they? But they can take it, right?..... Right?

This makes me wonder if quasi-deities, like the Voice in the Darkness, have had a greater impact on the history and progress of the Protoss than previously believed? Taking advantage of their divisive essence for destructive ends? Chaos gods of the WH40K universe, anyone?

Probably they are not being tough with the protoss, but they want probably to end with them... Seriously, StarCraft 2 came after 12 years, and when asked about it some director just laughed ^^

Na seriously, its Blizzard they would never throw a 50 year plan away XD. Probably everyone will end up semi death but then Kerrigan will find a way to evolve again and kick some protoss and terran asses. Hello BW 2.

    They are called climatic accidents:

Dustin Browder: "HELL yea and the protoss have survived the StarCraft universe because they have a lot of endurance and they can stand tons and tons of damage. Then comes the zerg and THEY SURVIVE AGAIN, UNLIKE KERRIGAN!!! *shit, I revealed the end of legacy of the void, again...* Soooooo, lets move into the art panel ^^''

    Oookay, I see now...

So the psionic storms that were unleashed upon Braxis and other protoss colonies were those storms unleashed by the Dark Templar. They were scattered across the void by the Conclave. While the protoss were saved as a whole, many lives were still lost.

Given Browder's recent statements, I wonder if the Discord and Dark Templar Exile -- and by extension the ensuing strife and storms -- might have been engineered by some or entity to reduce the protoss population? The Voice in the Darkness, which was attributed with destroying multiple civilizations in the past?

Protoss are dying for many reasons:
    1) StarCraft & Brood War events
    2) Most of them are old and they take ages to grow to a mature point and reproduce difficultly (at least, that's what it seems like)
    3) Archons. When Templars merge into Archons, they remain as Archons for the remainder of their life and they lose their energy after a while and die. (meaning quite quickly compared to a how a human life lasts)
    4) They're spread thin and are divided, while humans are divided, but centered around one area. Plus, each Terran faction is likely larger in population count than that of most Protoss factions.

At least...That's how I see it. I could be wrong, I may have missed something, etc. :P

Kudos to Arkceangel for the Terran avatar and sig!

That's just what they want us to think.

I wonder if it's possible the Voice was controlling some things from behind the scenes even while it was sealed away, in a manner similar to Kerrigan's telepathic communication with Raynor and Mengsk while she was in the chrysalis.
