How would the Protoss even know how many of the Xel'Naga worlds they've covered? For all anyone knows they could have 1000 000 planets and the Protoss captured like 20 000 of them.

That's what the manual said. The protoss don't necessarily know this. It seems to me they just try to colonize every ex-xel'naga world they find.

What I can find on the matter:

Over the course of only a few hundred years, the Protoss conquered hundreds of worlds within their corner of the galaxy, and spread the fruits of their great civilisation to many of the more advanced races that they encountered. All in all, the Protoss inadvertently succeeded in reclaiming an eighth of the worlds once presided over by the Xel’Naga.
Also, in relation to the whole bit about how quickly the Protoss can have children, there was a story in one of the Frontline volumes that said they had some crystal that would help with their number, or something like that, IIRC.

l33telboi: that would be the Kassia Crystal, which can either promote or discourage proliferation. Apparently.

Protoss viagra? Huh. Shoulda known it would come in crystal form.
    Aaand sold.

To be honest, the whole crystal thing is one of the biggest negative sides of the Dark Templar series, IMO. Back when I first read the Starcraft manual the Protoss came of as a very scientifically advanced race, it's just that some of their tech relied on crystals, mostly in conjunction with power generation. There’s no doubt that the Protoss are basically elves in space, but there was also tangible sci-fi and technology involved.

But in the Dark Templar series (and some of the Frontline stories) it was all taken down to seem almost like they were wholly from some fantasy franchise. Whatever the Protoss want to do it has something to do with crystals. They need to power a ship, oh there's a crystal for that. They need to transfer memories back and forth, oh there's a crystal for that too. Everything is just crystals, crystals, crystals, and the fact that the Protoss are a technologically advanced race seems to have been forgotten under all those crystals. It's more fantasy then sci-fi.

And now they even have crystals for making babies. If Aldaris were here, he’d definitely point out that we have enough Pylons by now.

It's just that their tech is highly based on crystals, but a crystal to increase population looks like a stupid asspull after saying that 70% population was killed. That kind of stuff is better given a second thought before written.

Also, all books/comics/whatever involving the Protoss seems to have something to do with the communal link (now called the Khala, because by now even Blizzard didn't remember that the Khala was their religion, and the communal link existed before that).

Anyways, it seems like every history about the Protoss has to be about some weird "Khala accident".

... You forgot the fact that they made the Xel'Naga temple into one giant crystalline structure in the last book, too.

Anyone else think Protoss lore revolves around crystals way to freaking much. It seems like everything that has to do with the race is some kinda crystal.

The terrans need to develop sonic frequency technology. Oh hello there void ray, ZAP, oh hi warp prism, ZAP, oh hey stalker, ZAP, oh...

Real crystals don't necessarily need to be easily broken with sound. In fact, the "crystal" used in cups isn't even a crystal, it's a kind of glass.

But yeah, i think they tend to use the same "devices" too much. Crystals and the Khala, and lost artifacts.

Maybe the Protoss aren't that purely advanced of an alien race. Maybe they're really more steampunk themed — or rather, "psipunk" themed. A still tribal race that powers everything off of psi.
