My own personal idea is somewhat like the psi-reproduction as people mentioned. I think that the protoss who want to reproduce join minds, combine their own feelings, thoughts, etc. From that, a small, physical psi-entity is "born." and it can grow and learn on it's own. Basically I think of a mini-archon without the sacrifice of the two Protoss

How do we know their even diploid?

According to lore from several books, these kinds of interaction between protoss are way too common. Telekinesis and mind reading is their way of communicating as we use words, but they "join" minds in order to share experiences as we use books. Reproduction could just take this interactions to a higher level.

I highly doubt they reproduce asexually, because the protoss would just disappear or suffer a high weakness for a prolonged amount of time due to the fact that if this process involves high amounts of energy.

According to Lore Panel 2007, protoss do not have external genitalia. (See "Orthos".)

Also, in real life, there are plenty of species with two genders where neither has external genitalia. Frogs, for instance, simply have a hole (they externally fertilize; "mating" occurs because one male keeps other males from spilling near the female). Same with most birds; they have to press the holes together in order to mate.

And there are many types of plants and fungi where the only real difference between genders is one produces small reproductive cells ("males") and others produce large reproductive cells ("females").

In the core lore itself, I don't recall many protoss romantic relationships, however. The Twilight Archon story in Frontline did have one, although no reproduction occurred (being separate for four hundred years tends to reduce the likelihood of that occurring).

StarCraft: Insurrection (the kind of lame quasi-official third party campaign) made a relationship a part of the plot, saying the archon hero used to be a couple in love.

And on another note, terran romantic relationships are kind of rare, which I'm thankful for. I don't need official StarCraft slash fics, thanks. Even semi-important characters like Edmund Duke have never portrayed a romantic thought in any lore.
