If that's what you want to believe, sure. I don't think there's a wrong answer here, it's vague enough to be up for interpretation. It's only a visual representation of a Planet exploding, whether or not the beams go through aren't entirely important.

Well, then I doubt you'll get a true lore explanation through the manga, which is mostly the artist's interpretation of the event. The fact that Carriers are shooting beams is already a questionable lore change. We don't really have any other information beyond this that carriers are the ones that carry out the Purification process.
However, if we do go by lore, here's an excerpt from the wiki
The process is powerful of burning holes in a planet's crust deep enough to allow magma to escape to the surface, along with dispersing (some of) its atmosphere.[3] Minerals on purified worlds are often altered by the attack.
