Generally you'd assume it takes quite long to burrow to the core/mantle of a planet. I seriously doubt those shots managed to punch all the way through the crust that fast.

The protoss were just beginning the purification process in that image. It's not like we were seeing the planet dead already. (If it was, then how do Jim Raynor and all but one War Pig survive?)

That's my point. If the beams would've dug through the entire crust already, then the planet should be pretty much destroyed already, since that takes time. But we know Jimmy gets out alive, and the blasts we see there are only the opening shots, so...

Well, after getting all the Frontline Mangas for Christmas, I had time to observe the bombardment image more.



Now, is it just me, or are some of the shots going all the way from one side to the other side of the planet? The Beams seem to be causing large explosions on the opposite side of the planet as if they went through the entire planet. Is this plausible?

They don't actually go through the planet. They don't line up that well.

To me, from the manga itself, they do. I used a ruler to check.

The beams aren't going through. It's most likely that the beams are causing the planet core to superheat, causing eruptions. It just looks like it because there's so many ships, beams and eruptions.

But the explosions are exactly in line with some of the beams.
