It's stated that 'gravity boots' are used for that role.
My guess is 'exhaust port', but it might not run that hot all the time. Could be warming up the reactor, or whatever the suit is using.

It makes more sense in the context that they are exhaust ports. Massive armor of awesome requires massive energy sources of awesome. Massive energy source of awesome requires massive exhaust... of awesome.

Rule of cool, but there's a quasi-logical progression.

Even so, what if the marine had to kneel or go prone? *whoosh!* and away he goes into the troops behind him.
    Aaand sold.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

If they were exhaust ports, they wouldn't have regulation / direction control. About the Marine going horizontal, just turn down the output power, or shutdown it, and problem solved.

Gravity Generator: The suit is compatible with Gravity Generators for use on space platforms.[4] Grav-boots may provide an alternative though.

I think I remember reading somewhere that a CMC can also run off of the marine's own recycled waste for a few days, (or at the very least supplement it's normal fusion power with it).

Gravity Generators aka thrusters to simulate gravity. And it says that the boots are just an alternative.

That's unlikely seeing as how they're used to create gravity on space platforms and capital ships (mentioned here). Unless these have thrusters pushing down on every square inch of flooring, that's not how they work.

In my perspective, I don't see 'direction control', or thrust vectoring-like structures. Though it could be a regulator, as the heat generated could vary, but we don't know exactly what they are. I wouldn't discount it as exhaust ports based on visual conjecture just yet.

And as an alternative, I doubt they would use gravity boots when they have an in-built gravity generator. Or would the back compartment be empty space if a marine chooses to wear grav boots instead?

I suspect that the 'exhaust'-like structure is a critical suit component. According to the wikia (which sources Liberty's Crusade), all CMC suits share "an air conditioner (a "backpack" which channels heat away from the body)." I wonder if the book meant as a basic air conditioner from external heat, or a more advanced one that channels the huge amount of thermal energy generated by the power source.

But not all kinds of power sources generate heat. Batteries, for example, generate very little heat. Heat is also produced when energy is used, because of inefficiencies in the devices.

Also, i don't think the powered suits need so much energy to work, you can move a 1000 Kg car with a car engine.

A problem with the new Marine suits, is that going stealth seems to be completely impossible, as it would generate a lot of noise and heat with that turbines on the top, whatever purpose they serve. They would also burn whatever comes close to them.
