Aaand sold.
Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

That was a pretty amazing essay. The point I most strongly agree with is how you justify shell casings and muzzle flash. It exists, therefor it is. The lore metzen writes can't be wrong, because in terms of lore, he is the alpha and omega, he controls all aspects of it. If their is a discrepancy beyond some miscommunication between a book author and blizz, it isn't a inconsistency, were just missing something. The fact that it exists in the game is all the proof it needs. If blizzard calls it a gauss rifle, even if a lot of its functionality seem somewhat arbitrary, we have to assume we are missing something, because they, by definition, as the creators, cannot be wrong. Your explanation was pretty logical as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to deify Blizzard, NewComplex. There are inconsistencies between the books and plot holes in the game. Retcons, too, by their very nature, threaten to introduce inconsistency.

That's a railgun. Railguns have muzzle-flashes because every time you fire a shell the rail-assembly erodes. That's also one of the reasons why some remain skeptical as to how much use they'll have on the future battlefield. Coilguns shouldn't have a muzzle-flash, unless there's some part of their mechanism we're unfamiliar with. Suffice to say that when you have a coilgun as small and powerful as the C-14, it's going to incorporate technology we're not familiar with.

Yeah, what ^he^ said. Though both rail guns and coil guns use electromagnetic forces to "fire" the projectile, they use two totally different methods of producing that magnetism.

There is however an inconsistency between the muzzle flash theory provided by l33t and the actually game.
He suggests in his fan theory that its a mist to dispel the heat accumulated by the gun which as an end result looks like a muzzle flash, but in the game the muzzle flash actually lights up on the marine's suit.

I think that's just a lack of knowledge on the part of the artists.

I think the best explanation is that the gauss rifle is actually a hybrid.. an initial conventional explosive round starts the bulet forward while the coils send it to Hypersonic speeds.

That was epic win right there.
I agree, Vis, that we shouldn't deify Blizz to the extent that calling them on retcons and blatant inconsistencies becomes impossible. But this is obviously not one such occasion, as has been quite masterfully proven.
