Thread: SC2 has In-Combat Quips

    Default SC2 has In-Combat Quips

Remember back in the day, when the SC2 website was actually being updated, we got a few very curious gems in the uploaded quotes from many of the Protoss units? Immortals talk about the enemy breaking, the Mothership gets all worried about being undone once they're breached, the Void Ray mentions that his enemies have already been purged, and so on, and so forth. For a while that was interesting and then I assume most people forgot. I know I did.

And then recently I was re-watching the singleplayer demo from BlizzCon... and what did I stumble across if not random in-combat quips!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9YXVpi_mKQ

The firefight starts at 3:35 or so. From then, the Marines call out "How's that for whoop-ass?!" numerous times when they have obviously been given no new orders, among other phrases such as "Get some!" (3:37) and "Medic!" (3:53).

Nothing strictly new, but it is a confirmation of our suspicions. I wonder what specifically triggers them, and how many there are per unit. Will Marines call out for Medics in multiplayer when a player only has access to Medivacs (it would still be true, just not quite as literally as before; same function, different name)? Will they call out for Medics when you have none on the battlefield, just as figuratively? They're going to need some complex triggers, too. "Medic!" works whether you're winning or losing a battle, but something like the Immortal's "The enemy is undone" might sound weird when only one Immortal is alive, and has managed to somehow kill 4 units in a row out of a 30 unit army.

    Iiiinterestink. Veeeery interestink.

    That's single-player; they're probably quasi-random transmissions.

Way to break our hopes and dreams.

That'd be awesome if they did have that kinda stuff though.

That could be useful, especially when you're having to macro and pull away from the center of combat. Of course it could annoy other players, so it might be an option that's toggled between on and off.

In the instance of losing all but a few units in a force, it might be cool for the surviving units to mention something about a Pyrrhic victory.

I never noticed this before. I really like this feature.

Well, that would be really interesting. And I bet then it would be, not only in the campaign, but in multiplayer too. Come on, if they made 30-40 decals for EACH race, they can make 3-4 triggered quotes per unit.

Most recently, Dawn of War 2 uses this to great effect. It adds to the realism considerably.

Yeah. Like when you first encounter your enemy, for example, you're space marines, and you find your first your opponent on the map after scouting, you're guy will go "Eldar...."
Or the Chaos shouting out "DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR"

I think it'd be cool if SCV, in his red neck voice, went "Boss, we got trouble... it's the Zerg!"
Or a Probe beeping sporadically while in the portrait screen, it projects a holographic image of an SCV, briefly.
    Toggle-able, of course.

I'm pretty sure that super hardcore idiots from tl.net would be crying if this is in multiplayer.

As long as these aren't endlessly repeated the same phrases over and over again for no good reason, I'm game.
