Thread: Vehicles that can move and shoot

Units that can move and shoot would break a lot of valid micro I think you should have to have to be able to harass. On that note the void ray can only move on its own while attacking, the second you tell it to move in any direction it stops.

It would also make units like the Tank wayy too powerful and extremely too easy to use, if you want the type of pay load from running and gunning you should have to have the micro skills to make it happen.

I don't want a game where a noob doing A-click can beat someone who has learned to micro units well.
Sonic: [dressed as a cop] Let me speak to the driver.
Grounder: I'm not driving. He is!
    Scratch: No I'm not.
Sonic: Driving without a driver? Now you're really in for it.

Sonic: You know? I sure have fun.

Fire on the move is a very powerful game mechanic that isn't to be taken lightly. It's absolutely devastating against melee, or short range attackers, that wouldn't be able to catch the unit while it runs away.

The Void Ray has short range, and requires it's target to remain within range, so it was added to keep the unit from becoming useless.

I don't know if you noticed, but Siege Tanks could move and fire in SC1, however, due to their fire rate and damage, I think it was balanced. I don't think that should change.

Kind of sounds like some type of 'slow and purposeful' type of thing is in order. It makes sense to have slower units be able to fire on the move, really all it would accomplish is let them get off their first shot as soon as they come into range, anything slow enough for this to apply would be chased down and killed my melee units anyway.

I tried this in Starcraft 1 and I cant seem to the siege tank to move and fire. Are you sure?

"Break" is kind of a strong word and depends on allot more things then just being able to more-and-shoot. For instance I think that allowing tank mode to move-and-shoot would increase the viability compared to just using siege mode. But too say it would be wayy too powerful thats really just your speculation. There are so many things you can alter such as damage, time between fireing, siege tank speed, etc...

Also move-and-shoot would be easy for noobs to use. But for a pro to take advantage of say the hellions AoE and move-and-shoot would require allot more micro. You would have to issue seperate move and flanking attack commands.

STs can't move and fire. However, their firing delay time (the time post-firing that they must wait to move) is fairly short.

The same is true of the Hellion.

'Move-and-Shoot'ing makes sense for the tank, but not really for the Hellion (there's only one guy in there, you don't want to over-task him by telling him to drive and shoot at the same time).

That is a fairly logical comment (whether technically correct or not). Perhaps to accomodate that while adding a greater level of micro, the helion could move-while-shooting when flanking or retreating from the acquired target, but must move-stop(once in range)-fire if advancing towards the acquired target. switching targets or switching to flanked targets would give the micro benefit of strafe-firing so to speak.

    thoughts?

(personally I dont know if the helion/tank are 'broken', but shoot&move would add a nice extra element.)

I have to say I got a little excited when the ideas of "move-and-shoot" and "Siege Tank" were put together. Warranted or not, the first thought that went through my head was, "this is what the Siege Tank's been waiting for for about 10 years now."

It seemed way back in SC2's development that Blizz was interested in giving the Tank an identity of its own, but that agenda seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Basically move-OR-shoot is a miniture version of Siege mode that all units have. You move and then you stand stationary to attack. The issue with the siege tank is the siege mode is so much better then teh move then shoot option. If you allow the tank mode to move and shoot youve made it a viable assualt and retreating unit. And its slow speed prevents it from "overpowered" harrasing micro.
