Who is your favorite protoss character?

To be clear, I said Aldaris attacked the citadel, not that he attacked the dark templar first, but to answer your question, no, there is no evidence, but it couldn't have been Raszagal - that would have given away her disguise, just like lying about the attack would. Of course you can say that she sent some assassins or something, but that's completely unparsimonious - now we're just making up lore. I think it's obvious that the writers intended for Aldaris to have overreacted and attacked first.

Zeratul and Artanis could have easily reaffirmed Raszagal's words. It would not have served her to lie. Artanis was trying to figure out what was going on i.e. "aldaris has taken control of our templar warriors and arbiters, it is possible he may send archons against us."

Perhaps, but you would think that Artanis would've stopped to consider how exactly Aldaris could have converted so many Protoss (Templar included) to his cause unless it held some merit. At least Zeratul stopped to ponder the Matriarch's orders. Artanis just charged ahead without question.

Artanis didn't know how important the rebellion was, but he was probably thinking "how dare that bastard prevent us from defending our world?" (There were probably plenty of Templar who wanted to return to the old ways, including having Judicators in charge.)

He was focused on saving his people. I don't blame him for his reaction. Also, unlike Zeratul, he didn't know the Matriarch, and so had no reason to suspect she was acting oddly.

Heh. I voted for Aldaris before I even read the thread; surprising how much attention he's gotten. As people have mentioned, he's got a lot of character depth for someone who was essentially a designated antagonist.

He was set up to be the bad guy and yet did everything we would want the hero rebel to do in the face of a corrupt government.

That's true. Aldaris was outmaneuvered (mainly by his own inflexible personality). Its sort of like the heroes being tricked into doing something bad (except it was Zeratul who was tricked).

A character that was in not even one third of the game is the most hotly debated Protoss character here and at the moment together with Zeratul the most popular. It shows how great storytelling can be when everything isn't painted black and white and when "good" is a matter of perspective, just like real life.

I think the real reason why he is generally well received and the most hotly debated of the Protoss characters is because he is their sole character who isn't a total black (Ulrezaj) or white hat (everyone else).
