Can someone test this out in Warcraft III?
Get some peasants/wisps/peons to harvest wood, then move damaged mechanical units near them.
I would test it, except since I moved I can't find my CD/DVD collection. It's a good thing my Brood War CD was in my computer when I moved...

They don't. They'll only do it if you take them off harvesting.

I think that ends the thread right here.
In Warcraft III, it's common practice to take a worker or two off of harvesting, set them to auto-repair, then have them patrol behind each entrance to your base. (The workers will repair damaged mechanical units and base defense structures.)

Nope, WC3 workers will not pull away from harvesting to repair.
However, you can loop them around the base using multiple patrol waypoints, and whenever they get near anything damaged, they will stop to repair the damage, and then continue their patrol.

In case it wasn't clearly cut in the previous examples, this is how it is in WC3 and I suspect in SC2. Assume all the following points has "autocast repair" on unless otherwise stated.
Important point about auto-repair: It has a "detection distance" of sorts. This is translatable to the medic of SC1. If a damaged unit entered this area, the medic would move to the unit to heal. This is what I mean when I say that.
- If an ATTACK-MOVE order is issued.
- If all mechanical units are never damaged from the source point to destination point, the worker would perform a basic ATTACK-MOVE.
- During the action, if any mechanical unit with less than 100% hit points enters the detection range of a worker, it would interrupt the attack move and move to repair the units.
- If after repairing, all units are 100% and no other action were supplied in the mean time, the worker would resume the ATTACK-MOVE until it reaches the destination.
- This allows workers to be placed in the same group as mechanical units and not create issues with ATTACK-MOVEE commands. This is also relatable to the medic of SC1
- If a MOVE command is performed:
- This overrides Auto-repair, and the worker will manually move to the destination. Upon reaching the destination, the "detection range" kicks in immediately and it looks for units to repair. If none are present, it stands still like it's supposed to.
- If PATROL Command is performed:
- If a damaged unit and an enemy exists within the area, it would first repair, if all units are repaired then it would perform typical attack commands but would cancel commands if it detects damage to repair again.
- If no units exist to repair, or attack, then it will resume patrol.
- If a HOLD POSITION command is performed:
- Holding position will take priority. Repair will be prioritized over attacking if a repairable unit enters range at the same time as a melee enemy.
- If a REPAIR command is performed manually:
- This will take full priority over auto-repair.
- Think of this the same as a medic doing a manual heal on a unit, It will heal the unit to full, then reactivate it's "detection range" after the command has been completed.
- If a HARVEST command is performed manually:
- This will take full priority until it is cancelled.
- However, if a unit with auto-repair is harvesting and the harvest runs out (minerals end) it would then issue a "stop" command at that point, allowing him to immediately auto-repair anything that is in it's detection range.
I hope this helps alleviate ANY confusion whatsoever with people who are not familiar with Auto-repair as it exists in WC3.

Got me thinking about repairing Medivacs... toss a SCV in each Medivac for drops and have it repair the Medivac while the Medivac heals the marines. Might not be a big deal in late game with lots of anti-air, but a SCV could be an efficient addition to an early drop attack.

Oh gifted already posted, oh well
Auto repair is awesome!! the AI picks the closest target i think, which isnt always the one you want to be repaired.
What i'll probably do is assign one scv per tank and just move click on them so they auto follow, then put on auto repair so that if anything gets damaged they will move to repair it and then return to the tank.
