This is the only one I disagree with, nah I like the UED being involved and being a major player in the story, no cheesy "and everyone dies off screen in 5 minutes" garbage.

I'm not invested in it either. My other ideas included the UED being involved from the start, using the Heroes of the Storm version of their history where they invaded to put down Koprulu's rebellions or something.

Combined with the Dominion coming to power at the start of the story, rather than at the end, and the Confederacy being vastly expanded in scope... the terran politics get very more diverse.

So the Confederate states are fragmenting due to the wars. The Tarsonis-Korhal system has been claimed by the Dominion, but nine of their thirteen core worlds were devastated so they have their work cut out for them. The UED is reevaluating their priorities since they now have bigger problems than halting the Confederacy's wars of aggression. The Conclave massacred civilians at Tau Ceti, so now the Tau Ceti Federation is invading protoss colonies across the Koprulu border. The protoss expedition has split between pro-genocidal and anti-genocidal factions, with executors like Tassadar and Andraxus allying with terrans to stop further bloodshed. The Protoss Empire isn't taking this "border dispute" as seriously as you might want, since their extent is huge already and they have so many other seemingly more important things to worry about. The Koprulu war isn't the only war they're currently fighting, you know. Interstellar imperialists like the Galra, the Yeerks and the Covenant make the Protoss look downright benevolent.

So I've been doing a bit more thinking about reboots. I've gone through tons of ideas.

Currently I'm entertaining the idea of introducing the Union as an opposing power block to the Confederacy. Because Civil War parallels. They're especially relevant in today's political climate.

While the Confederacy and the Union are waging wars of aggression, with both sides having good and bad parts to them, aliens invade. At first it's the zerg, who are underestimated as space bugs. Then the protoss arrive and glass several inhabited planets, starting interstellar interspecies war.

There's any number of stories that you could tell against that backdrop.

Anybody interested in discussing that? Something else? Anybody?

If you guys would prefer to discuss an original universe, that's okay too. Just let me know ASAP.

The broad strokes are similar to canon, but I rebooted the timeline and took some inspiration from early drafts of the story where the three races had galactic empires.

The setting is a first contact war in Koprulu sector between the three races of protoss, terran, and zerg. Each has many factions with different motivations and moralities.

The protoss are a galactic empire that considers themselves the gardeners of the galaxy, so they invaded terran space to exterminate the zerg pestilence. This did not go well. One faction consider the terran casualties collateral damage, and another side rebelled to stop the genocides. Now the terrans hate the protoss for the genocides and want revenge, while the nice protoss try desperately to keep things from getting worse for everyone.

The terrans have many different nation-states at each others' throats. The Confederacy is trying to conquer the entire sector, the rebels and UED are trying to stop them, etc. The two alien invasions only made things worse.

The zerg are monsters driven to chase perfection by consuming the strongest species in the galaxy. For millennia they have prepared for war against the protoss, with the terrans being the latest invasion intended to cultivate new weapons. Unfortunately, the terrans proved unexpectedly resistant and the protoss got involved prematurely. Now the zerg have to deal with all sorts of new obstacles to their plans.

And that's just overall. There are numerous factions that add further wrinkles, like the nerazim, taldarim, ihanrii, rogue zerg, enslaved zerg, fist of redemption, etc.

All sorts of stuff is possible. As a war setting, there are few stories you cannot tell against that backdrop. Romance, drama, mystery, etc.

The backdrop for my proposal seems pretty solid by now. I’m interested in discussing potential stories. There’s a ton of freedom here.

maybe the Overmind sends a brood to rescue some enslaved Cerberus zerg. The PC has to attack hive mind emulators to release them, then find a way to remove the mind control implants. Nova Squadron is still attacking them at the time.

Maybe a fleet from Tau Ceti attacks a nearby protoss colony in revenge for the genocides and to prevent the protoss from warping troops to Koprulu. Maybe a band of ihanrii offers an alliance, as their people in stasis were also killed by the empire’s callous planet glassing.

There’s tons of freedom here
