Am I the only one who doesn't understand how Hydralisks shoot their spines, even now after the updated graphics?
Aaand sold.
Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Okay, this is the only thing I can figure out, given the anatomy and sprite we have to work with:
The distal edge of the crest erects, expanding a pouch hidden behind the head that contains the spines. The grooves you see house the actual spines, or act as rifling for them.
EDIT I'd love to see Robear create an animation where a Hydra flaps these things and flies away.

^That's definitely correct. The flaps/pouches definitely unfold from between the frill carapace and the back carapace, same as they did in the original sprite.
I'm hoping someone rips some full-resolution spritesheets from the remaster so that I can lay them out or animate them as gifs in slow motion or whatever.
And then also if you want to see what my SC2 version of the original hydralisk looked like in its firing pose, here are a couple screengrabs. The pouches are a bit flatter (and probably more plausibly foldable) in the Remaster than in mine.
