I, personally, think that is the only way any zerg commander really makes sense. Even if cerebrates, queens and overlords talk and display personalities, every brood is a gigantic super-organism.

Still you stress on the whole hive mind issue. Does this mean you'd shoot down any author who'd attempt to try to give zerg more independence?

I have yet to see any story which gives the zerg independence. They fundamentally do not work as independent actors unless they are trying to eat the galaxy. SC2 depicts them as puppets with no will of their own. If you asked Zagara or Niadra why they do what they do, beyond simply following Kerry's last orders, they would not be able to give a reason of their own volition.

The Overmind pre-retcon, and all the primal zerg post-retcon, inevitably came to the conclusion that they should eat everything. They go about this different ways, but ultimately that is their motivation as a species and it is the only motivation that makes any sense for them.

Even the bizarre story about Zagara's half-human baby only ever depicts it killing things.

This is why I felt Evolution explored a side we didn't see before. You can argue that trying to show a change in zerg mentality is BS, but then you might as well argue that in the end, no one EVER learns anything in the SC universe.

Evolution is widely regarded as terrible. It has a battlenet hate thread and everything. Even the famous Timothy Zahn couldn't make the crappy SC2 lore work.

I suspect a key reason why the fanfiction does not focus on SC1-era politics is due to ignorance and the way SC2 turned the zerg and templar into worthless wimps.

The other day I talked with someone who liked the primal zerg, and he did not know that the SC1-era zerg had the same motivation and cool factor as the primal zerg since he was introduced through SC2.

I am probably the first person to introduce the original protoss and zerg politics into fanfiction, and the context is lost on my readers since they only know the protoss and zerg as wimps compared to the awesome primals and tal'darim. That is really frustrating to me, because I get the impression that I have to recap the backstory for my readers to understand anything I am referencing.

If my readers don't understand anything, then they won't read the story and won't leave reviews. Without reviews to point out my flaws, I cannot improve.
