Yeah well the power of life over death seems quite abundant in the SC universe. If he's revived, there needs to be a good explanation.

We shouldn't bring the UED in. They are just too trivial in the K Sector, and giving them a larger role will just reduce things to your average dystopian story. For the time being, let's keep the UED on Earth.

    - Mengsk and Raynor should not be outright enemies. Mengsk should be too busy dealing with his power grab to go after Raynor. In fact, Mengsk should both know and approve of Raynor's desire to kill Kerrigan, and despite their mutual hatred, he's constantly pestering Raynor on that point. He should capture Raynor at one point, but instead of killing him or whatever, instead promise Raynor funds and soldiers if he can find a way to destroy Kerrigan. Raynor, if he accepts, should use this support to bolster the outer worlds. Or he should refuse and go help the outer worlds, but either way, Mengsk wants to support Raynor in defeating her, because he knows that no one else is as vengeful against her as good ol' Jimmy.

    - Valerian, on the other hand, should be dismissive of the Zerg. Since the Umojans and Morians were not greatly impacted by the brood wars (yeah, let's call it that), Valerian doesn't appreciate the deadly nature of the Zerg. It's not as if he knows how much the Protoss and in fact Kerrigan contributed to the current piece, in that the Protoss destroyed the Overmind and Kerrigan secured the victory against the second overmind, without taking on the Overmind's destructive ideals.

Valerian is of course interested in Protoss technology, and engages in shifty activities to get hold of Protoss technology. He wants his father to forget about Kerrigan and negotiate with the Protoss, though he does not tell Pappa Mengsk that he's going to take advantage of any alliance if he can.

    - The hybrids, as I understand them, were first envisioned in Confederate labs. This makes sense, given that Duran claims to be a Confederate, and this is probably a truthful reference to Duran's manipulations in the Confederacy. Mengsk should absolutely not be involved with the hybrids. Not everyone is involved in every evil, and it's just cheap to tack them on to Mengsk when someone like him would never intermix the genetics of the two races that hassled him so much.

Valerian also should not start off involved, but if his studies make him discover a hybrid, he can either try and study the hybrids to his advantage somehow, or perhaps realize he's gone too far and alert everyone else that something isn't right. Either option can work, depending on how it's taken. Exactly how evil do we want this guy to be? Does he turn good, become worse than his father, or abandon politics to join whatever creepy cult Duran follows?

    - Kerrigan is the hardest character to write for. She, more than anyone else, was painted into a corner by the events of BW. She's gotten revenge on anyone who ever hurt her, but obviously isn't interested in destroying/infesting everyone. What we need to establish for her is how much of the Overmind's plan she knows, and how much she wants to carry it out.

Now, from the looks of it, Kerrigan doesn't appear interested in whatever the Overmind originally wanted (keep in mind I'm ignoring everything in SCII). While we can guess that the Overmind's goal was to infest the Protoss, but they also wanted to secure the Khaydarin crystals. Either these crystals will help them infest the Protoss or will help them do something else. So, what do the Khaydarins do? Are they valuable enough for Kerrigan to want to keep Aiur? If not, is she vengeful enough to want to keep Aiur for herself anyway?

But the Khaydarins are just one potential path for Kerri. If they mean nothing to her, what drives Kerrigan, now that she's got her revenge and no one controls her? I imagine she's more or less as indirectly suicidal as Raynor, given that she also has no home, no friends, and nothing to live for. Though I imagine she amuses herself by toying with Mengsk -- preventing him from settling on resource laden planets, randomly destroying shipyards, etc.

So there has to be a convincing way for her to find out about the hybrids (anyone who mentions "prophecy" gets a slap). She could either encounter Zeratul, find Valerian's mischief, or watch as the hybrids emerge from stasis. Any of these options is fine, but I prefer the last one, as it prevent people from being prepared for what happens.

I have an idea on how to write Kerrigan and still incorporate some of the amazing Metzenian romance.

Kerrigan was pregnant with Raynor's child, when she was infested by the zerg. The child was concieved the night after the psi disruptors were planted on Antiga Prime. Raynor wanted to 'help' Kerrigan because she was upset over selling an entire planet out to the zerg. Raynor was aware of the child and that's why he was so against Kerrigan going down to Tarsonis by herself.

Anyway after Brood War, the pregnancy gets worse and Kerrigan has to give temporary pause to the zerg invasion. There's a time skip and during that time the zerg evolve all their new units and all the respective developments happen with the other races.

Then SC2 begins and Kerrigan restarts her invasion with the newly born Prince of Zerg who happens to be this zerg-human hybrid. She shows him off to everyone, especially Raynor. Raynor is shocked to see what his son has become.

    ....................

OK maybe this is getting too far fetched but hey StarCraft is designed to have a dark story so I do think a dark romance can work in it.

....No. I'm pretty sure I've seen a fanfiction of that somewhere already.

Well it does raise the question: What happens to the child of a pregnant lady when she is infected?

Nice ideas Nissa. I'll try and synthesize them into the mix.

I just woke up though, and I'll just post a few story points I had in mind this morning (yep, I'm a day sleeper) :

    AMON
    ---------------------
Initially, they speculate Amon is a last remaining Xel'Naga who wants to finish the Xel'Naga's project to create the perfect species. To honor their race, and finally cement their legacy for all time and creation to remember.

However, Duran later calls his master, "a legion".

In truth, AMON is an artificial intelligence so advanced it can appear to be sentient, created as a helper to execute Xel'Naga commands. His last commands was to ensure the Overmind project would be completed. But when the Xel'Naga died to the overmind, it is left with only this directive to try and bring to actualization.

AMON was an attempt by the Xel'Naga to create true sentience, which they later deemed requiring more experiments. They have since utilized AMON to aid in their experiments.

Much like how robotic arms and computer software help humans. But this one Computer is so advanced we are shown it to be a size of an entire planet, orbiting a dying star.

It is powered at the core, and its main processor is this quantum sphere, housed in some obelisk on the planet-sized machine. On here, AMON can drive super nano-tech to resemble humanoids, or beasts, metallic ones to protect itself.

    DURAN
    ------------------

Duran is an advanced organic robot, created by AMON. Thousands of Durans are in stasis cells on the planet-machine AMON. But there is only one super-chip that can bring this Duran to life. His many names are attributed to this.

After some hundred years or so, Duran returns to the AMON and gets reintegrated into the system, and given another body, made "alive" using the same super-chip.

In order to facilitate its covert methodology and ability to deceive, Duran is programmed with routines that somehow could be recognized as basic drives and desires similar to true sentient beings.

These instinctual base though has been designed to make Duran into a loyal agent. All it thinks it deserves is freedom. Which means to be shut off. The Duran will do everything it could to achieve what it was sent to do, through the methods he is programmed with, only to be decommissioned.

    An eternal slave.

    HYBRIDS
    ------------------
When the Overmind failed, Duran was sent to find a way to complete the Xel'Naga project. The culmination of a cycle began along time ago.

But the Hybrid proves to be insufficient. Only the real thing can work.

Duran's studies on Kerrigan has revealed some strong possibility that her physiology hold more information than initially thought. After all, Kerrigan's infestation is said to have speed up Duran's research in some way.

Hybrids emit unique Psionic wave-forms. They are like music instruments, but only in terms of Psionics. They "vibrate" to an extent, causing certain effects.

    KERRIGAN
    -------------------
Her body is beyond redemption/deinfestation. She's changed forever. Her brain is evolved with a gland that holds primitive commands like we have. But this one is of the Overmind.

This in harmony with her Human frontal cortex (somebody do the science if possible) made her into another being altogether. Her actions, methods, desires.

The empty feeling she felt at the end of Broodwar is a sign something inside her wants more. Her instincts, this deep desire we can barely grasp is pushing her to do something more. That her path was a mistake.

    KERRIGAN, THE HYBRID
    ---------------------------
Kerrigan was the first to be attacked by hybrids. In bursts, and in particular intervals of time. And the longer she is exposed to hybrids, she's changing.

At first she went into alpha state. Like stoned with the good stuff, she wandered space and found herself on a distant planet. She quickly returns on Char, only to find out the platform is destroyed.

Since then, the frequency and number of Hybrid trying to get close to her has increased. She tries to kill them quickly, but soon it wont be enough. More powerful hybrid are being released. It's all part of a processes aimed at something.

    KERRIGAN and the OVERMIND
    ----------------------------------
Kerrigan's physique contains information unique to her. But not special. The Overmind cannot create new species, only take what already exists, mix, and evolve. His creation of the cerebrates are part of his evolution. A part of itself.

    Kerrigan is no different.

His need for Psionics drove him to Terran space. His primary goal is to create the perfect species through the Protoss assimilation.

Not only did the Overmind possess knowledge of Psionics, but it needs to possess it. It has through Kerrigan.

Kerrigan's brain, this new organ evolved with it contains all directives of the overmind. His will, his desires, and thus allows Kerrigan to control the Full Swarm.

She could not control cerebrates, but her guardian cerebrate. They are both inter-connected. Created together. The cerebrate allowed Kerrigan to exercise this organ in her brain, her body, which eventually allowed her to grow more and more powerful and proficient.

Killing her guardian cerebrate was a sign she has grown past being a fledgling. She can now exercise more of this muscle in her head by herself. She can now control the cerebrate's broods.

Destroying the newly formed Overmind is part of the Overmind's designs in her brain. The overmind will not compete with itself. It has birthed itself from within Kerrigan, through Kerrigan.

Now, Duran is seeking to unleash the overmind essence within Kerrigan through the Hybrids. Once it has fully overtaken Kerrigan's mind, her human self will be slave to the Overmind, and the Overmind will finally be reborn with Psionic powers.

    Evolution complete.

    THE ARTIFACT
    ----------------

Zeratul discovered the existence of the Artifact from within the Xel'Naga Temple on Shakuras. The Temple is said to be a sort of data storage device, and fail safe.

The Artifact is the real weapon. Its design is to counter-act the proto-genetic designs working within the Overmind.

When the Overmind was created by the Xel'Naga to unify the Zerg into one essence, they had a fear that this too contains an inherent danger. Much like diversity leads to self-annihilation, too much wholeness might lead to destruction of "the other" or anything not the self.

This super-ego they have created must be observed, and if it fails, should be destroyed without risking other creatures or the Zerg strain as a whole.

The vibrations of this device will kill Synaptic nerves and realign synaptic firing to bypass the Overmind essence and completely eradicate it from the Zerg species.

    (continued)

INT. MENGSK'S OFFICE - MENGSK PALACE, KORHAL - DAY

Mengsk takes a seat, and hesitantly presses a button on the table.
Images appear in front of him. Holograms. It's a meeting with various individuals. Dangerous ones. Men of power.

Mengsk: "Gentlemen. Thank you for your patience."
Chubby Man: "I hear you've finally completed your lovely palace on Korhal. I must say, I like what you've done with the place."
Bald Man: "Must have been quite expensive, am I right Arcturus?"
Mengsk: "Gentlemen, I assure you, the deliveries are on their way. Forgive the slight delays. I'm sure you understand the Zerg --"
Bearded Man: "You know how we've survived this long Arcturus? We respect each other. Men like us in a place like this, we only have our words to stand with. Honor, Arcturus. Respect."
Mengsk: "Oh, believe me, gentlemen, when I owe someone a debt, I repay them in full."

Chubby man: "I hear you've lost control of nine mining operations in your territory. I must say, maybe we should step in and... help you out a bit."
Bald man: "Some debts can be paid with stronger cooperation, don't you think Arcturus?"
Mengsk: "I know you got every single crate in those ships. I know you're the ones buying them from the insurgents."
Bald man: "Better we got them than someone else more, inconsiderate, am I right Arcturus?"

Mengsk: "Listen to me. Once I'm done with the rebels, I assure you, you'll be richer than you could ever dream of. Not only that, I can guarantee your operations will never again have to worry about competition."
Bearded Man: "You see, Arcturus, I'd like to think you consider us more ... competent. After all, we've been here even before you crowned yourself Emperor. We can manage on our own, and seeing as though you can't even deal with a small band of pirates, maybe it's time we ... lend you a hand. Manage a few planets, a few territories."

    Mengsk: "Are you threatening me?"
    Chubby Man: "How ungrateful."
Bearded Man: "Seeing as how I owe your father, I'll let you ... take care of business for a while. After all, how can anyone learn without making a few ... mistakes. I believe you are competent enough to meet our agreements, Emperor Arcturus Mengsk."
Bald man: "Emperor ... I find that title dazzling. No, more like, a celebrity, don't you think so, Arcturus?"

Bearded Man: "Until our next meeting."

The holograms turn off. Mengsk picks himself up, and walks towards the viewing window.
AUGUSTGRAD, a bustling city, contrasting the vast desert behind it. Mengsk's prize, and a reflection of his fears together in one picture.

    (to be continued...)
