Default Creative Writing - World Building

This should probably go into the Holodeck given its nature, but we all know its a black hole right now.

Anyways, there's been something of a revival at SCL lately and I want to take advantage of it. One of the StarCraft boards I used to frequent as a kid eventually evolved into a forum devoted to sci-fi world building, but I think that site went down a few years ago. Right now, I'm reviewing and editing several writers' manuscripts focused on fantasy stories, illustrating a cover for one too, and they've got some pretty neat ideas.

Do any of you guys write? Do world building, whether it's StarCraft-related or -inspired or not? Even just come up with little concepts here and there that, while they are not stories in-and-of-themselves, might make a neat addition to one?

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

    Oooooh!

I write. I'm writing too many things at once, actually. I've got a story where Aldaris has found his way to earth, an original fiction about superhero girls, and a Starcraft themed choose your own adventure that I've got ambitions to show off to Blizzard. Yes, I know, nerdy.

I write a lot and I read a lot. Sadly, I've only lurked the "What are you reading" thread.

I've always loved fiction and sci-fi. I find both worlds rich in complexity and as such I'm harsh on myself when I write about them. I regard fantasy as a genre for easy world building and sweet limitless dreaming.

I'm currently building a world for an indie, fantasy, RTS game. I really don't want to share anything until everything is fleshed out and backed up by law. I like that world probably too much ^^

I have probably wrote 50 short stories, in spanish, from either fantasy, sci-fi or fiction. I dislike showing people my WIP, so here I'll translate one for you. Let me know if you want more.

    The Crystal Bird:

Long ago, a bird flew through the skies. It beared a beautiful suit of feathers of a deep sky blue color. Only a few could see it by the day and even less could do so at night; but those who could desired its plumage. Many times they did try to catch it, but from the skies no one could bring it down. It was not until a mage crossed the earth to catch the bird that it was finally caught.

The man was wise and he took the bird from the hands of the hunters through wiles. Three days later, he returned to the same lands and offered the bird as a gift for the noble princess. He demanded only one thing. The mage wanted to part with the seasonal winter of the kingdom.

Without a proper conversation the King thankfully granted the region's winter in exchange for the bird. With a swift motif and a snapping of fingers the mage produced a wand from his sleeve and enchanted the land so it would never see snow again. He took leave politely and patted the bird one last time.

The first years were full of joy for the people of the kingdom. Without snow, they could harvest and plow the land throughout the full year. Old men healed and lived longer as did the good climate. Everything seemed so filled with peace and harmony within the kingdom, but times changed when the plagues arrived. Some strange year was specially horrible. Plagues ravaged every region and as winter closed in around them the plagues withdrew into the region without one. The warm climate nourished the locusts and the crops were constantly destroyed. The situation grew worse with every year, and the locusts barely left the region at any season but summer.

The King commanded search parties to look for the mage, but he was never found. However, a witch came from the west and offered the King help. In despair the King agreed to the demands made by the witch, who solely asked for gold and jewels. She enchanted the bird and its beautiful plumage turned into shards of ice crystals. Then, she instructed the King on what must be done. During winter, the bird must fly free so the needed snows may come.

So that was how it was made. The King liberated the bird almost immidiately and snow fell down after two hours. However, no one was ever able to find the bird again and the castle was burried in ice.

I think we have all partaken in horrors in our fanfiction history. For example, I made a boxers or briefs joke when referring to archons. Me and some friends on a now dead forum all made mini crackfics of each other, slash with Starcraft characters. My favorite was one where I married one girl to Mengsk.

I wrote an epic joint 4-part fan-fic/RP on a Spore forum. Ascension, Betrayal, Crisis, Discord.
