Default Why was Hanson mad that you cleansed Haven?

If you opt to side with the Protoss, Ariel gets mad that you decide to cull the colonists. Only problem is that it's exactly what we did on Meinhoff, and she voices absolutely no objections there. Instead, Raynor is a hero in that mission. Literally, it was virtually the same exact thing.

The only thing that comes to mind is that in this instance she's trying to buy more time to finish the cure. But if that were the case, why didn't she say "I'm close to finding a cure" not "I know I can find a cure!". The former would be more logical grounds to hold off the purification, whereas the latter doesn't exactly inspire confidence. :P

Well, I guess maybe it's like this:

Meinhoff was a refugee planet for the people of MANY worlds that managed to escape the Zerg invasion. Remember, Raynor may have saved the people on Agria, but he knew he couldn't save everyone from the invasion. It's likely that others managed to escape, and fled to Meinhoff.

This would be consistent with what Tosh said on Redstone III, that when the Zerg arrived, the Kel-Morians fled the planet.

But a better explanation would be this:

Look at the following convo between Raynor and Hanson AFTER Meinhoff:

    Dialogue on the Bridge

Hanson and Horner are on the bridge.
Jim Raynor: Well Ariel, found a world for your people yet?
Ariel Hanson: Yes! An unclaimed planet called Haven. It's near the edge of protoss space, but it seems safe enough.
Jim Raynor: It'll have to do. Your people need to lay low for a while.
Matt Horner: Aren't either of you worried the colonists might be infested?
Ariel Hanson: How could you even suggest that? They're perfectly healthy!
Jim Raynor: I hope so, Ariel. The protoss don't mess around when it comes to infestation. Just in case, maybe you should start looking into some kind of cure for the zerg virus.
Ariel Hanson: Conventional wisdom says a cure is impossible -- the virus mutates too fast. But I'll look into it.
Jim Raynor: Just do what you can. That's all anyone's askin'.

That's what I noted in the OP. Why not say "I've made some progress since then" instead of "I know I can find a cure"? The latter just sounds delusional to me given her previous claims of it being impossible and the fact that she only has a few hours remaining to actually synthesize the cure that she hasn't even invented yet. No sane person would believe her.

I guess these communication failures sort of happen in SC all the time. Aldaris deciding to attack the citadel without talking it over with Zeratul/Artanis. Selendis deciding to fight Raynor before, you know, trying actual diplomacy. Still, seems like Hanson should have at least attempted to make a better case.

Well, based on what I wrote, Raynor DID seem to agree a cure is highly unlikely, maybe he just didn't expect Ariel to succeed.

Don't forget, if you HAD sided with her, there are still infested terrans in the main base while you're trying to stop the Protoss.

Besides, we never got to see the RESULTS of the cure anyway...

Right, and why not? Ariel should have offered up more convincing evidence than "I know I can do it!". :P

Not really gonna touch that. That's a totally unrelated case of the writers changing reality on us based on Raynor's choices. How do you go from an entire map covered with zerg to a couple cages in your base?

    They were cured:

"The protoss terror fleets have been driven off, and the infestation has been cured. Dr. Hanson and the colonists are now free to start their new lives on Haven."

At least in that reality. In the other one, her cure failed. :P

You'd do well to remember that Raynor isn't one for scientific terms.

Let me show you the following:

Raynor: So these things are still a big mystery, huh?

Hanson: Actually I have found something interesting. Whenever you use that protoss device over there, the artifacts respond by drawing together and expanding their molecular matrices.

Raynor: A little slower and with shorter words, please.

Hanson: Well, if you think of them as dry sponges, they draw ambient energy like water. These things try to absorb as much energy as they can.

    Raynor: Are they dangerous?

Hanson: Not if you're human. If my theories are correct - and you were a protoss, for instance - they could drain the life right out of you.

Exactly why a response like "I know I can do it!" is not bound to inspire confidence and requires more elaboration. How about a "I've reached a breakthrough and need more time."

Well, are you certain Hanson was REALLY sure?

Maybe it was that time of the month? *flinches at inevitable scorn being directed my way*
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.

Define "that time of the month", Turalyon.
