Thread: Starcraft 1 Beta had Yellow Minerals!

They originally talked about the Terrans having a kill-based ranking system in SC1.

There were a lot of unique, interesting ideas that didn't make it.
Zerg being able to prematurely spawn units which were physically weaker was one of them, but I think it lead to rushing, instead of quickly-needed base defense, as it was intended.

Anyone care to wiegh in on if more distant mining would increase/improve harassment?
I'd say, completely depends on the map and mining locations. Personally I think it'd just make the base build up around the mining path (and terrans would just take off and land closer to mins if it was possible)

The second set shows the minerals and gas that we know now. And while the probe carries the same gray stuff, I imagine that to be the universal gas containers. In the first image sets, you see a big of green as well, so I assume the gray stuff are just vespene containers.

    SIDE-NOTE:

Who's bright idea was it to have tanks able to shoot air units at all? That's not even close to being realistic.
As you said, they must be from different builds.
BTW, had any of you seen the original High Templar's face? it's like Care-huevo!

    EGG FACE!

I believe that was going to be a veterancy system, yes, but I think that was where the kill-counter came from.

Well the concept of having all ur resources right there easy to find next to the CC was modern at that time. Other RTS games at that time had sometimes vast scouting missions for food.

    I found the timeline interesting:
1996: early alpha with WC2's engine.
1997: alpha with SC's engine, and balance kicks in!!!
Early beta also in this year. Engine updated, polished units.
en of 1997/start of 1998: beta. Engine updated again, units added and polished, some balance fixes.

Notice the early balance, and duration of alpha phase.

What of it? It's two years long, but StarCraft has been in development since 2003; correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Alpha pretty much everything before the Beta?
Arcturus Mengsk did nothing wrong. Tarsonis is just a conspiracy theory.

Alpha is like a playable version of the game, Beta is like a candidate for the released product.

StarCraft II started in 03, but was sort of in the air because of resources to WoW and the technology, and didn't really kick in to production until 05. The single player also probably held the game up a bit.

When SC2 was announced, it was Pre-Alpha, and didnt go into alpha until... I think mid 2008.

Which the Battlecruiser, Carrier, Overlord, and Science Vessels would be. Compare to the Hydralisk, which attacks "high-air" units (pretty much any but Muta and transports) through what basically amounts to will-power. "Super-muscles" gets you far. It does NOT get you that far. :P

The divide between what units can attack air and what units can't is and always has been arbitrary, if you're viewing at least remotely through the lens of realism. The primary goal has ALWAYS been gameplay. If it served gameplay to say that Marine rifles couldn't be accurate at those distances, that's exactly what they'd say.
