Quit talking about characters and plot holes. Talk about things like setting.
Considering I'm one of the few that actually listens (though, that's waning too), I'm trying to help you out here.

*facepalming* An example of a plot-hole is why didn't Narud just get the Tal'darim to give Raynor the artefacts. Don't think I anything like that here.

Hm, variations on the theme of "Starcraft 2 sux", I see...
There was no explanation in Sc1 at all. It was whatever you wanted it to be: bringing more broods by acting as a beacon, tapping into the inherent energy matrix of Aiur, allowing Protoss to be assimilated.
As to the real reason that "it wanted to die" being a good handwave for this problem (seriously, it didn't really need answering even then)depends on how much latitude you have for the revelation that it had a restrictive directive that turned out not to be so restrictive afterall.
The Overmind was the Swarm, so it was everywhere the Zerg were.
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.

How? Kerrigan's force was destroyed. The protoss were still fighting, and the narrative tells you that the main protoss fleet withdrew from the terran sector after the fall of Tarsonis (presumably, they returned with Aldaris). That's why Tassadar arrived with a rabble on Char.

Depends. The adjutant registered that several dozen Protoss warships were converging on New Gettysburg. It's unknown what the overall composition of them were.
The UED-remnants are still fighting in the Sector, but would you consider them a threat?
I'm talking about the state of player-characters in StarCraft-II lore. Given that Raynor easily defeated Selendis' fleet, I doubt that Tassadar's forces in the retconned-version of Rebel Yell gave any fight.
Never shown that all of them were destroyed. Just because contact was lost doesn't mean that some could have survived.Kerrigan's force was destroyed.
And it was a rebel 'task-force' going up against the Zerg Swarm and Protoss fleet. In addition to that, Mengsk had no problem abandoning them -- they were expendable, and not much at all of the Sons of Korhal forces.
