Thread: Regarding Fear the Reaper (Spoilers)

Duke only made one mistake in Uprising; not sending enough marines. And sure Mengsk outsmarted him, but Mengsk is a genius.

In I, Mengsk he was a loser. In Shadow of the Xel'Naga ... maybe Blizzard will admit that should never have been canon

Which would result the Dark templar saga being non-canon, that would be an awful mistake.

Nah. All the stuff you need to know from SotXN is replicated in a paragraph in the DTS.

They even changed something (eg Alpha Squadron wasn't completely wiped out.)

Finally read the thing. I loved it.

The way Nero had to lift the C-14, still attached to the Marine arm, pretty much confirms what I've always suspected about this new model. It's a bit too big for an unarmored human to run around with. So it's a good thing the same story confirmed that the old and new suits, as well as the old and new rifles, are both part of the lore, and that it's not just a visual upgrade type thing. That can explain how some people are still able to use the things unarmored in the novels. They really should’ve given the C-14 another name though. Doesn’t make much sense for both variants of the rifle to be called just C-14.

As for the earlier discussion about the explosives. Well, it did seem to destroy the building, judging by the panels and the disappeared building. There’s also the mention of everyone being dead after just the first explosion. But then the other explosions were a lot smaller, so who knows.

As for Duke, the less said about SotXN the better. Pretty much all the characters were OoC in it. When it comes to I, Mengsk though, it wasn’t that bad. I'd trust the game most though in getting him right though. Which indicates he was a fairly experienced general (judging by the 30 major battles thing) and as Mengsk put it: “He’s a snake, but he’s our snake now.” The guy was loyal to the end.

No, his biggest mistake was warping the Norad II in front of the Hyperion to keep it from escaping...and not once bothering to turn his ship around to face it so he could actually fire before Mengsk did his ramming trick. But then you wonder why Mengsk himself didn't just start opening fire on an unprotected opponent instead of that whole ramming thing.

The first can be explained by the artistic style (which BTW some of these are just horrible, so bad you can barely tell what's going on in the story), the second by it being a reference to all the greeting party being dead, not every base personnel. As you note, the explosions just aren't big enough to take down a multi-story embedded military building.

He walks his troops into an obvious trap and has to be saved by Mengsk, who commented earlier that, considering this scion of an Old Family was still a captain at his age, he had to have screwed up as well sometime earlier. The fact that he kept Duke around tells me it had more to do with the propaganda value (Here's a member of the Establishment fighting for the Revolution!) and the loyalty of Alpha Squadron to Duke rather than himself. After all, as soon as he was in power he sent Duke off into the hinterlands so that he wouldn't cause trouble.
Superior capability in language does not necessarily equate to superior intelligence...but it certainly doesn't help your argument if you sound stupid.

To be honest, I see no reason to assume it as artistic style. The building that was there a second ago is gone and all we see are a few random spikes jutting out from the ground. At the very least that indicates some pretty massive damage, because the room he threw the bomb into has all but disappeared. Unless they decided to remove the room and put random pillars there because of artistic style as well.

And when he said everyone at the structure was dead, he obviously meant everyone was dead: "Dominion base. Pirates have slaughtered everyone at the science facility."

As you note, the explosions just aren't big enough to take down a multi-story embedded military building.
I said the ones we see later weren't big enough. I'm guessing there could be different strength charges depending on what mission they'd be used on.

It is possible he keeps him around more for the propaganda value, or more likely, because of the information Duke has as a former Confederate General. It already proved quite valuable when they destroyed Tarsonis.

Ha! that scene was pathetic. In Liberty Crusade it was clearly stated that the Protoss did warp closer to the planet than the Terrans will ever attempt. That made sense, turning off a FTL device in the precise instant to be near something is an extremenly delicate matter, then they warp in front of the Hyperion that was about to FTL escape itself? Are they crazy, or they just enjoy FTL collisions?

Because it shows up in other panels, not only the ones on the same page but on other pages as well; i.e. when Nero confronts the guy in the SCV, it's just a black outline of them with white background. This style shows up in other mediums too; for example, the Team Rocket entrances in the old Pokemon cartoon (yes I watched it, but in defense I was ten). The artist will switch things around to enhance the effects of or draw attention to certain people or actions in a scene.

Besides which, blowing up the building is counterintuitive to their stated mission of going there to steal stuff.

And when he said everyone at the structure was dead, he obviously meant everyone was dead: "Dominion base. Pirates have slaughtered everyone at the science facility."
When taken in context with the scene, it's clear he's sending that message back to whoever to throw them off from the fact that they just killed friendlies and are engaging in theft. Not that he literally killed everyone, since only a few Marines and a Goliath were on the landing pad.

Except the explosion we see isn't big enough either; it wasn't even powerful enough to knock the Reapers off their feet, and they were only a couple dozen or so meters away. And it would've been a very odd-shaped explosion, considering it somehow leveled everything down to the landing pad, but left everything else below it unharmed.
