Thread: Zerg music genre?

    Default Zerg music genre?

This has been bugging me for almost a year now. What genre(s) is/are the zerg music?

    For reference:

Posting links to artists and songs would be helpful.

The special thing about the Starcraft 1 Zerg music was that a bunch of it was in 5/4 time, which helps it to feel alien and unsettling. Other than that, it's just normal distorted rock/electronic sounds. Here's an example of a guy playing a couple of electric guitar riffs in 5/4 time (skip to 2:30 in the video).

Here's someone playing a keyboard solo in 5/4, and if you can imagine it with more electric guitars and drilling sound effects and things in the background, it could be part of a SC1 zerg track.

Then mix in ambient parts with ominous synths.

Unfortunately, I don't know any artists that really sound like that.

Well it's not really one genre. More like a combination of multiple stuff. I'd say something along the lines of ambient electronic with a touch of rock because of the electric guitar. It's kinda progressive too so hmmm I guess I'd say ''progressive ambient electronic rock''.

In a quick youtube search using terms mentioned above (and other stuff like alien or space), I found stuff like that:

If you're looking to find an artist that do exclusively that kind of music you might have hard time finding one since ambient is usually happy, sad or neutral in emotion. It doesn't usually have that aggressive vibe that the zerg music has. On the other hand though, if you wanted to make music like that, it would be pretty easy. You just need to strum some power chords with some distortion and lots of reverb/echo over an ambient background and you're set kinda...

I've actually been meaning to try making something similar to the zerg soundtracks, but I never got around to it. The odd time signature definitely plays a big part, though the sharpness of the guitar and the percussion are also important. And of course the creepy synth.

If I get around to making something like this, I'll post it here for you guys, though that might be a while.

I think the closest I've ever heard to zerg music was nine inch nails:

There's some Massive Attack songs that are very Zergy .. although I can't remember the names. On of the more recent albums though.
