Thread: SCII Flashpoint novel

I'll give you some early reassurance in that since Matt appears in a trailer for HotS, it's very unlikely that's the case.

    Another question I had:

    Hidden Content:
Given how easily Dr. de Vry reproduced Egon's voice, why did anybody in Wings of Liberty actually rebel over a recording of Mengsk? They treated it as some sort of irrefutable proof. It seems that making false recordings should be as easy then as photoshopping is now.

You can make a false recording of someone in real life, but people tend to believe it's true. The Church of Scientology stole a woman's paper (with her fingerprints on it) and sent in a bomb threat to the government. The woman in question was investigated quite thoroughly before they released her.

Of course, had Mengsk not suffered a mental breakdown then, he probably would have said that's false. (In fact, he might have anyway.) Unfortunately for him, he looked like a guilty man right then. Even the best liars find it hard to keep their game face on when caught by surprise.

Technology like that is always risky to put in stories. I get the a flashback to the time travelling device in Harry Potter, which was introduced in book 3 of 7 (if I recall collectly) and never heard from again.

EDIT: Would be much simpler to have Raynor failing to get contact and then realizing what is going on.

I was both disappointed and pleased by Flashpoint.
    Hidden Content:

The issues of the Battlecruiser and Warfield could have both been solved by a single sentence; "Warfield returned to Dominion space proper with a portion of the fleet to help safeguard it against mindless, marauding bands of Zerg." Done. How hard was that? Because I see no way Warfield wouldn't have involved himself with the events of Flashpoint.

I'm pleased with Mira Han's inclusion and characterization in the novel. I wouldn't mind seeing her again and Matt softening towards her.

Overall it was a decent novel tie-in, I'm just worried about how it will interface with Heart of the Swarm. It's probable that everything in the book will be overlooked, because the status quo essentially much remains the same (excluding the battlecruisers, of course.)

Regarding the Hybrid (is the plural of Hybrid now Hybrid?); I like to think that the ones on Prometheus were essentially prototypes, having not achieved the same level as Destroyers and Reavers. It was implied that two of them could have been mowed down by a pair of autoguns; whereas the Destroyer encountered by the Raiders earlier in the campaign was completely invulnerable to their weapons.

    Aaand sold.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Finally got to read it, and must say that I really liked it - For me, it was as interesting as I, Mengsk if not moreso.
Although I will admit, that might simply be because it's the leadup to HOTS.

    Hidden Content:

While I thought it had several cliché story elements, they were told in a good and interesting manner.
(Here I'm thinking of stuff like Valerian being set up as the "the guy who will eventually become king", or him being the fish out of water on Dead Man's Rock)
In particular I liked the look into the Hyperion crew, as well as the constant twists in the relationship between Matt Horner and Valerian.

    ---

Narud started off interesting when he played the harmless, yet supposedly 'brilliant' scientist - I kept wondering what his real angle was, since he was extremely eager to examine Kerrigan.
But the way his true colors were revealed was, like Gradius said, done in a cartoon villain style.

    ---

Stuff like the issue with absurd battlecruiser numbers doesn't really affect me - Not after growing up with stuff like the Star Trek series and all the contradictions from one episode to the other.

    ---

I was also wondering why Warfield wasn't even briefly mentioned - But more importantly, I was wondering where the heck Gabriel Tosh was at?
Didn't he in WoL say that he would stick with Raynor until the end? Or was his WoL death the canon scene?
I would have loved to see how he would react to Valerian, given his 'Mengsk-hater' attitude.

With Tosh, I think he (like Hanson) are trying to avoid being mentioned because of the choice thing. We know he survives in A canon, but unless he has to be used, he won't be used. Certainly it's been confirmed he won't appear in HotS.

Makes sense - Had the potential for some hefty Raynor<->Tosh arguements though.

I didn't know Tosh was confirmed absent in HotS - aww another disappointment, for me at least.

I dunno what to feel...if I should either be happy...or disappointed that Tosh won't be appearing in HOTS.

It's disappointing that Blizzard chose not to develop his terrible filler arc into something much larger because it makes his overall role in WoL even more pointless...but I'm happy that I don't have to put up with more of his god awful filler story that affects nothing in the established Starcraft universe. Shame too, cause his Breakout mission was one of the only times I actually felt connected to WoL's campaign.

It's either another retcon or they have decided to follow through with their philosophy that choices don't get referenced, which makes the choices even more meaningless. I'm still waiting for Blizzard's internal database for cross-checking of lore to kick in.

Oh well, at least I can rest easy since they're basically done novelizing SCBW, and it's WoL's lore that's going to get mangled now. :P
