Thread: Sc2 vs Sc1 VA comparison

Are we talking about unit responses and the story dialogue individually or together?

It's a mixed bag if we're looking at the story dialogue alone. In a few instances in WoL, the written material didn't really endear itself too much for any convincing voice acting to even begin...
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.

There were very few instances where I wasn't bothered with SCII's voice acting. Read that again; where I wasn't bothered, not where I enjoyed it. I don't recall an enjoyable point in the campaign, voice-acting wise. Their efforts were miserable, and as an amateur voice actor and audio editor myself, I have a firm belief that I could have done a better job on the Protoss (sans Selendis) and Overmind voices.

The Tal'Darim Executor in particular was fucking horrendous. He sounded awful, and I'm sure the intern who voiced him got a bunch of high-fives for his horrific accent job or whatever the fuck he did to make it sound like that. Just plain stupid.

I have to agree with Turalyon here, too, but I'll take it a step further in saying that the dialogue was in dire need of re-writing before any voice acting was to be done.

    Proof?

    Agreed.

don't want to bring small pet-peeves or whatever but, imo, a lot of general voices and unit responses sort of resounded in your head. if we're specfically adressing actual voices and voice actors i'd say the voice of Karass was one of the few that put any amount of impact into both his quotes and voice, from the protoss side that is. actually, most protoss hero units sounded ok to me. Not every character need 'oomph' but they do need something to make them memorable - individual. Paul Eiding makes a great example of a commanding tone (not a pun...despise puns) and SC 1s Zeratul sounded old, dry, almost vengeful. i know this is a matter where we're supposed to take actual people seriously as an investment in the story but for that to happen solid writing needs to be- alright...sorry, not going to start anything. All in all, i think some talents are alright, some are unmemorable and some make me want to push my own acting-career to a higher point.

Check this out for a more direct statement, although this also works.

Type in (Insert unit or Hero) quotes on youtube and witness the broken base.

    They all sound the same.

As for StarCraft II, to be honest, I actually like Zeratul's new voice actor. He has a fitting voice. Really, it's his cheesy lines that bother me so.
I don't mind Zeratul's new actor, but he could have done a better job. The difficulty here is partly in the direction they took Zeratul's character, to a bewildered old man. I almost want to say a Space Deckard Cain. His words are far too drawn out, and Tatasciore just lacks that edge that gave the Zeratul of Brood War a dangerous feeling.

If you wonder what I mean by "edge", refer to this video of Zeratul's quotes from Brood War. You can hear what I mean in "Khas Nala-dah!" and "But we do this for Aiur -- not you." You can hear that sneer that I love so much.

Tatasciore's Zeratul is more platitudinous, as evidenced by this video. His equivalent is to shout, something the original Zeratul never did. (See 2:18, 2:27.)

Tatasciore approaches that same volume of gravitas in the opening of The Prophecy cinematic. Why they couldn't -- or wouldn't -- maintain that same level is beyond me, but Zeratul would have benefited from it immensely.

When it comes to Tassadar, funnily enough I don't mind having motherfucking Worf portray him. But I still don't know why they couldn't have gotten the original to drop in and voice him.
    Aaand sold.

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Maybe it was because Tassadar's role in WoL was only conceived last minute? I hear that Tassadar's inclusion was only so that people (and Zeratul for that matter) wouldn't question the authenticity of what he actually says. You can see how well that went.
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.

It's a mixed bag. I'd say the SC1 voices were 'manlier'. The only voice in SC2 that gave me that vibe was Karass.

The Zerg in SC2 sound pathetic though, I think we can all agree on that.
