Another key point that I want to make is find players of equal skill level and some who are a little lower.

It will always be easy to find replays of higher skill level regardless of the activity, watching the us open for example. Watching players who have all the basics covered and can excute well is a must to get yourself in rythm.

Finding players who are equally skilled as you. This is one of the hardest things to do as a competitor as no one likes to lose and finding a player of equal skill means you should lose around 50% of the time. Use each other and build off of each others growth. I compare this to having a good running partner. If you are new, don't try to run with someone who has been doing it for years, you'll only slow them down and you wont feel rewarded for the acomplishements and milestones you pass.

Finally a player who is a little worse then you, say you win 6-7 ouf ot 10 games. Why? Because you will be teaching them what you've already learned and expressing what you learned into words. By being able to explain why you do things, it gives you a better understanding of what exactly you are doing.

Practice, Practice, and more Practice. Allen Iverson would be proud. And no cheat codes either!

I don't think playing sc1 will help you very much, just being good at RTS in general...which ofc you can get with playing sc1 but war3 as well.

I watch alot of SC...and play mostly war3.

    I'll be fine.

Playing alot of sc1 will force you into old habits when the game comes out, old habits that don't work. Not that you can't adjust it just depends on the person...small things like transfering ALL your probes too a new base because your used to only being able to select 12....and going back to your base alot when you dont have too just because macro is so wired into your brain....also units don't counter the same units etc.

War3 players have oneUP on already knowing the interface and the new UI features pretty well....though if they never watched any sc will have to learn how some things go down but will adjust pretty quickly. The new UI is simple so sc1 players wont take FOREVER too adjust but war3 player will certainly know how to make use of it quicker.

So i'd say having a general understanding of SC and how the meta game works....and playing war3 would be your best bet.

But in the end it doesn't matter because it boils down too how good you are and how fast you learn.

I agree with Snake, but its not on how much time you play, but how you play at the begining and what you get used to. SC2 will not be the same as SC mainly for the infinite selection and other business (like automine and the cpu AI)

By the way, anyone interested on playing a little, with starcraft, on the weekend. Check my threads, about the little tournies

EA pros are rather noob on Blizz games.

they play games too slow, or too big for any real micro, macro.

    Supreme Commander
    -stupid big maps
-send all your units one way and mass production
-no real building of a expo
    -cant control air units
-units get useless as you play, no ups
    -luck
    -nice proxy fights

    Battleforge
    -nice game
    -no balance
    -no macro
    -lots of micro
    -fast game
-easy win tactics (Avatar of Frost, hell that thing was lame, imagine getting a bc at 50 mins on tech 2, now multiply by 1000)

    C&C
    -balance issues
    -slow motion game
    -real
    -lots of rushes
    -nice early harassing
    -easy win tactics
    -must do things

The best way to get ready for SC2 is to play SC1 till your brains slide out of your head, FACT. SC1 gives you the feel of the game and how all the basics work, WC3 is VERY different than SC2, FACT.

SC2 feels just like SC1 but better graphics, different units, different play strategies, and better UI and controls, but essentially the core game is the same, which is much different than WC3.

I would say: Don't waste your time with WC3 if you want practice and preperation for SC2, also check out all the wiki sites and learn the new units and mechanics, that will help you more than WC3 will..

If you don't care for my input I couldn't care less but I have played all 3 games and this is how it is.
Sonic: [dressed as a cop] Let me speak to the driver.
Grounder: I'm not driving. He is!
    Scratch: No I'm not.
Sonic: Driving without a driver? Now you're really in for it.

Sonic: You know? I sure have fun.

Well, I have this one massive problem. Let's say I'm playing a game against the computer. I'll have a plan as to what I'm going to do. Everything goes okay in the first few minutes (keep in mind I don't know the counters to each unit so I usually use zealots and dragoons - I play 50% Protoss, 50% random). But if we get to a later stage in the game I tend to forget about buying units (even expanding at times) and when I look back at my minerals and vespene they are around 4/5000+. It's like I completely forget about what I'm doing.

This is another reason macro needs to be improved, not discarded, for SC2. Good macro mechanics like Warp-In should catch your attention and encourage you to continually produce units.
