Thread: Unit Pictures

Swarm Queen looks decent, detailed enough.

    Good job.

I do agree with prioritizing certain objects over others, like Cerberus(pirate ship) over small things, but still doing trivials before LoTV wouldbe nice, like the Wanderer from the War Pigs comics, a Gunship, a Star Relic or hydolisk from Ghost:

As well as battlecruiser variants like Hurricane, Hercules and Leviathan. Personally I would place them as secondary because they are variants. Uniques First.

And on that manner could a Wrym be added to the to do list (fighter and walker mode)

PS. how big is an omegalisk?

The Omegalisk is a problem, because it's smaller than the HotS ultra in concept art,. I'm just not going to include it, since it's just an ultra with tentacles. If I include any ultralisk variant, it'll be the Torrasque, which I'll make a bit bigger.

I added an infested overlay to my Stukov, which looks pretty cool although in the main chart he's too small to see anything.

The Wyrm is a possibility, as are the others. Still a lot to go; spine and spore crawlers, a cerebrate, the overmind, etc.

Might I ask what all these drawings are for?

Basically nothing, haha, but I've done so many I can't stop. It's just one of my hobbies now, just to have a complete Starcraft to-scale chart. There were a bunch of reasons I started, though.

I figured drawing the normal units would be a good way to have manageable little things to draw without getting artist's block. And I've been drawing Starcraft art on and off since elementary school.

Another factor was that learning the lengths of all the ships and things was just a part of being a fan of other sci-fi universes to me. Like, knowing how long a Star Destroyer was, and seeing TIE fighters and shuttles and AT-ATs inside their hangar in IMPS: The Relentless was just a thing I always loved, but you couldn't do that with Starcraft. For something like Halo you can look up how big the ships are supposed to be, and see plenty of accurate fan made charts, but Starcraft, nope. With one exception, this one, from after SC2 was announced but before it was released (hence the 'tempest' and 'warp ray').

So, anyway, I wanted that kind of information to exist for Starcraft. Back in the day I tried to design interiors for SgtHK's ships and size estimates, inspired by the Star Wars cross sections books, too. I remember people like CrabTasterMan wanted to do the same sort of thing, with cross sections and all, but never got close to finishing, but I figured I could do the units if I just did them as sketches, have a nice website where you could compare the sizes and then have a poster to put on my wall. Except then there are like 200 units and still LotV to come, so I never printed anything out because I'm still going.

Cool. What you should do is fix your poster, like do one for each race, and then get Blizzard to print them and pay you royalties. That would be cool.

    Aaand sold.

Yeah, I am already splitting it up by race, and obviously selling them would be cool. I've heard from some people who wanted to buy a poster version, and a couple years ago someone from Team EG contacted me about the possibility of selling it as merch (which I got excited about, but then they stopped contacting me/responding, so, oh well). After LotV this might be a thing I pursue, since other people sell prints of Starcraft fan art... I doubt Blizzard would do the printing themselves, though, haha. They do know about the project, though, I was told following the HotS version that the development team are "huge fans," so that was some nice validation.

Anyway, keeping on going, spine/spore crawlers. Made up their size, someone let me know if they appeared in a Frontline comic or something that I missed. There were much bigger spore colonies in SC:Ghost, but I'm assuming that the crawlers are smaller.

Assuming you were asking about what that other fan-made chart was made in, yeah, I have no idea. I actually think it wasn't illustrator, in the full size version you can see that the lines aren't antialiased, which is kind of weird for vector art. It looks like it was all made with shape tools and gradient fills. Like, hypothetically, you could even make it in MS Paint, although that would've been insane...

It's very mysterious to me. Some of the drawings seem insanely accurate, others are obviously inaccurate, and I have no idea who made it or anything. And where did those carrier names come from? If you google any of them, you just get battlenet users with those usernames.

I think the charts originate from a Czech Starcraft Encyclopedia project that was clearly abandoned before SC2 made it to beta (the old fatty infestor is still in there, and lots of placeholder stuff), but that site has its own mysteries— it includes fan-made units, too, like a Protoss "Expander," with concept art and a custom portrait, and a custom wireframe for the Terran "cargoship" from the intro cinematic.

Was it going to be some sort of fan-made expansion, too, and those carriers are from their story? Or are the charts just hosted on that site (none of the other fan art there is in that style, most of it is sketches by one particular guy). Very strange.

Very interesting, good job on the crawlers, and remember the 2 versions of the photon cannon(sc1 and sc2).

Although that might be weird, as the sc1 cannon is a photon cannon while the sc2 is technically a phase cannon

Yeah, I would have liked if they had kept that movable cannon mechanic in (though I bet they would have had to make it only unlock after a citadel of adun or something, otherwise people would do nothing but cannon rushes, haha). We'll see how much new Protoss stuff LotV adds, if it's very little then adding a cannon is a good way to pad out that chart, but I don't know if I'd do both, even though I know they're different...

For now, I've got the sac/Zerg drop pod. Mine is actually bigger than the one from the HotS intro, which it turns out was only like 4 meters in diameter, max, but we can assume from the campaign that they come in whatever sizes they need to, seeing as one was big enough to drop off a hatchery at some point. I could still make it smaller, though.

Edit: yeah, I'm gonna make it smaller

I'd definitely make it smaller, then make an annotation for both the drop pod and the overlord staying their size can vary according to what's demanded of them.

Hm, that drop pod looks like it's considering eating the poor little broodling.
