Thread: Unit Pictures

The valk pic didn't seem at all off last time.

And what you said pretty much matches how it was before, from what I remember.

Also, a battlecruiser is 700 meters long (so like, somewhere above 2000 feet). Nowhere over 1000 meters (or 4000 feet, as you put it).

Specifically, the Minotaur-class is 560m long. There's never been a measurement of the Behemoth-class except the errornous one in Uprising.

I'm not so sure about that. Here's another calculation method: in the Brood War ending, we get to see rows of windows on the back of the hammerhead. We don't know how big they are, but they're probably a floor apart.

There are 16 rows of windows, plus a lot of space around them, so the whole hammerhead looks like it could be around 30 stories / 300 feet tall (which gives those hangars ample room for dropships).

In this image, the blue line, which is the height of that section with the hangars and windows, is about 132 pixels tall, and the overall length is 2000 pixels.

If 132 pixels = 300 feet, then 2000 pixels = 4545 feet / 1385 meters, even longer than I was guessing. If we amend that 30-story figure to, say, 250 feet / 76.2 meters— there are more than 25 stories there, but maybe a lot of those areas have low, compact ceilings like a submarine or a ship— then the length is only 3787 feet / 1154 meters. Still, either way is more than a kilometer.

Here's the SC2 Minotaur battlecruiser, too, at the 560 meters / 1837 feet that the campaign says:

Seeing all this makes my artist parts excited. :3 I like the attention to detail on the size and proportions of the Battlecruisers. Where'd you get the length of 1877 feet?
    Aaand sold.

    What about Starcraft 1's Observer?
Yes, that's right! That is indeed ME on the right.

So, it's either eyeballing it with pics or sticking with actual wiki records, which put the battlecruiser at 700m length?

    Same size. :P

(which gives those hangars ample room for dropships).
Why do the dropships have to fit in the hammer head? I thought that thing was meant to contain the many magnetic coils necessary for the yamato gun? Sure, it could also be a docking entry point (fly through a tunnel until you reach some sort of less obvious, better protected parking lot in the back area of the ship; for the record the less obvious something is, the better protected - this is general modern hull-design convention in the real world) - but not much more than that. I imagine a fleet that invades a world with dropships coming from orbit would require many battlecruisers.

Battlecruisers are, although grandiose, feeble things that can be built on a base relatively inexpensively (although they're still obviously the largest weapon the base can deploy; and probably bigger than any building - but they may lack the facilities that something more a bit more expensive, like a command center, provides). Terran warfare is no longer naval since the guild wars, so it makes enough sense. :P

But those pics look pretty cool - the behemoth really is huge, which is acceptable. Not many behemoths (or super battlecruisers, whatever they called them on the wiki) should probably exist - they're archaic things from a period in which naval warfare and big guns were thought necessary (the guild wars ended up being economical; for whatever reason around the time period, planetary sieges from big ships stopped).

For other titan war machines that you could draw, there's the odin and the loki - and I think the odin was supposed to be a propaganda tool - it's massive weapons useful for demonstration purposes; I'd say Raynor's crew probaly forged more ammo and loaded it up from there. The loki might be propaganda too, or maybe it was just a corporate experiment thing (big hull that's got decent air to ground cannons and fits many turrets; nevermind that it's so huge that everything will want to shoot at it).

I wouldn't put a great deal of stock in the unit measurements in the wiki. It varies a great deal between sources. And I can guarantee Blizzard didn't try to make sizes too realistic in the original cinematics; however, that's the best place to start when estimating measurements. In my opinion. The WoL cinematics don't seem ideal for such measurements since they don't give much in the way of comparison with other craft, though that's probably going to change with Heart of the Swarm. Hopefully.

I'm working on the Broodling and Broodlord. Like the guardian, it's only really designed to be interesting from above— I have a hard time drawing the units that are essentially flat and having them still look good. But hopefully I can get that up today.

Here are a few of the remaining smaller units, the BW Broodling and Spider Mine. They're really tiny.

And I've also drawn a Predator, but it seems so out-of-place that I don't know if I should bother keeping it in.

Thoughts? I 've been wondering if I should include one since the start because they just seemed so silly to me in the game, like something out of Zoids instead of Starcraft.

Predators do seem out of place in the StarCraft universe, but I guess it's fine. They will eventually show up in more places ^^

A lot of the SCII units seem out of place. They don't really feel like StarCraft.

    Good art, though.
