Thread: Unit Pictures

So I did some scaling and came to the realization that the carriers and void rays in the LotV epilogue (you'll notice they're smaller than the Nexus) are far smaller than the ones depicted in Robear's Official chart. Which is surprising, since the high quality cinematics tend to be looked upon as the ultimate source of canon. I wonder how Blizzard rationalizes this? It would be easy to say there are separate models of carrier, which we already know. But also different models of Void Ray, who maintain the size ratio to their respective counterpartner carriers?
    Aaand sold.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
The Forger's wake is bereft and fallow

    Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?

The road's goal is the Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Re: the previous page, I do want to do the Sentinel/Purifier zealot, don't really like Talendar but should if I'm doing other heroes, and don't plan to do Cybros. Sorry I'm so behind on these, I have real life stuff getting in the way.

Regarding the cinematic with the time-lapse, I remember looking at it a little back on page 120, and yeah, I definitely thought the scale was just mocked up. But we don't know how big those Nexi were intended to be, etc. Did you go off of the pylons? If you go by the Pylons and assume they're the same size as the one from the intro, yeah, I bet they come out pretty small.

One nice thing since page 120, there are some higher quality stills available for scaling now. Not with the carrier though.

There's definitely inconsistency within LotV itself regarding ship sizes. Like, the Void Ray that appears inside the War Council is way smaller than the one that appears in space shots from the Spear, even though they're the same model. So, I guess if you wanted to you could say that those represent 2 different canon void ray designs, and maybe the mini one would fit with these mini carriers... but I think they were just prioritizing image composition over size consistency. They wanted to have it both ways; have a battlecruiser big enough to dwarf buildings in the HotS intro, and have Carriers rival battlecruisers in size, and have Carriers come out of buildings in the LotV ending, so they did both even though they should be exclusive.

If you want to treat my chart as the absolute official source for the relative sizes of the capital ships, I think that's great, since it was approved. But I wouldn't be surprised if a cutscene comes out for a downloadable campaign that completely contradicts it once again. :P And for my part, if/when I make a carrier model, it'll go back to being bigger than the base.

I'm much more in favor of there being multiple sizes of buildings than multiple sizes of void rays. Though I also would have liked the void ray size they had told me to go with to be smalller.

Yeah, I essentially resized screenshots from the Unity cinematic to arrive at the proper size of a zealot compared to the Nexii in the epilogue, as well as resizing your chart for comparison. The difference is immense. Though I can see the Gantrithor-type supercarrier being that large. I was juat curious for... Reasons...

EDIT So I finally got a chance to view the Field Manual, and came across this. It cites the Battlecruiser as being only 500 meters long. Weird.

I think they did a typo of 500 meters in the picture Visions of Khas posted, as it goes against every other thing in the book. They probably meant to type 1000 meters.

Yeah I can't explain that at all, 500m makes no sense there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How cool is it though that they used my science vessel drawing's outline there though? Pretty cool, still pretty happy about that.

That Field Manual... Is alwais a pleasure for me to open it and watch the detailed unit descriptions and know that there are also your charts in it, again a great Book! Do you have in mind some measures for the two alive Xel'Nagas aka Ouros and Amon? I can't understand how kilometeres Amon is big but i think that Ouros is some dozens of meters
Don't forget also Alarak and Abathur, i think they deserve a spot on this list (maybe also Tychus to complete the trio? Even if he is a basic marine? Plz ?)

I can do a Tychus recolor no problem. As for the other units and heroes, there are a lot that I want to do. I'm not gonna plan out a whole list again because I'm still behind on ones I said I'd do months ago. :| But here's Tychus, and the marine that appears in the book.

On a side note, I don't like how the backstory they came up with for Tychus involves that blue suit of armor actually being his personal armor from back in the Guild Wars. I really don't like it.
I'm fine with him being a prisoner for ~10 years and missing the Zerg invasion, but making it his 10-15 year-old armor and it being identical to the armor of Dominion marines in SC2 basically means that the armor design technology didn't change at all from pre-SC1 to SC2. I guess it's not at all unusual to use 15 year-old equipment in a new war, so that's okay. But would they really have bothered to keep the personal, marked-up armor of a deserter repeat-offender criminal sentenced to life? Why wouldn't they just spray paint it clean again and give it to some resocced soldier. Doesn't make sense.

Also, the armor was designed before Tychus' backstory was written, so in the cinematic it has decals showing zergling and hydralisk kill counts, just like the Heaven's Devils tattoo design originally had Zerg skulls instead of human ones. Tychus the prisoner could have just been given the armor of any random dead marine and then it would have made more sense.

Well, look also at raynor, it has an sc2 armor back in sc1 recap... I think they simply retconned the sc1 armor for good, because our lord and Savior Samwise Didier didn't like it, god i love that man, his art is awesome, even if Luke Mancini art is better
