Thread: The great DotA conversion thread

I don't think that's a wise idea. of course, these heroes will feel new, with complete different models / names / play style, but their "niche" should be the same.

It's like making a sequel withuot using Zerglings or whatever.

I think the best way to approach DotA2 is to completely remake DotA and start stripping things out and putting things in. And why not call it DotA 2? Defense of the Ancients... this time the ancients are warcraft 3 heros.

DotA has evolved over years into the popular Allstars that it is now. I don't think it has to be a straight 1:1 conversion to make a new series work. I'd find it weird to see favourites that act but not look like the original. It might as well be a new hero. For the few fan favourites, they could be brought back with a similar model, but other than that I'd rather see something new than just a copy.

As a side note, anyone seen this Heroes of Newerth game? I'm surprised how this DotA clone blatantly rips off their heroes.

    Wut?

It should be called Aion Of Strife. It should have Raynor, Zeratul, Tychus etc. as playable heroes. SC2 DotA should be exactly that - DotA with a StarCraft theme. DotA players can keep playing fantasy-themed DotA on WC3. Aion of Strife players get to play it in sci-fi themed SC2. That's fair.

Thing is, IceFrog's spent a long time having the map tested for balancing. Having to create a totally new game WILL be a lot of work. I'm all for it, I just don't expect it.

Aww crap, I was going to add something else but I've forgotten... Oh yeah, now I remember, I watched the SC2 Blizzcon 09 Art panel (which wasn't on the bloody paid stream) and I'm quite confident that there will be plenty of art and models for use. I'm really impressed with the effort the devs are putting into the art now, it's crazy!

Hu? Aeon of Strife is also a WC3 map as far as I know. The concept is similar to DotA but it has three teams (layed out in a triangle) and less hero depth... It just didn't take like DotA because it wasn't updated and enriched enough (and having just two teams does make things easier to set up).

Whatever. If it's called DotA 2 people from W3 will instantly convert.

DotA is based off of a UMS map from SC1 called Aeon of Strife. WC3 Aeon of Strife is also based off the original SC1 map. Any subsequent versions of a DotA-type game in SC2 should be called Aeon of Strife. Durr.

Aeon of Strife was a different map map series tho, and DOTA was made most popular by the fact that units had custom abilities, not just a unit with stats that could be upgraded beyond the regular 2 times. Even the WC3 AoS maps used stock spells, while DOTA actually created new abilities and mechanics.

What I'd like to see is Third Person/RTS mix ala Natural Selection. Two RTS styled commander controlling buildings, unit spawns, path traps; everyone else playing in 3rd person as a hero unit for their team.
