Thread: Random Unit Attack Delay

Are sports like golf less skill-based because the weather is unpredictable?

Besides, I don't want to play a sport game. I want to play a war game.
Superior capability in language does not necessarily equate to superior intelligence...but it certainly doesn't help your argument if you sound stupid.

I haven't got a clue about golf, so don't expect me to answer that question.

Starcraft II is first and foremost a game designed to be an E-sport. When I watch a game between two players, I expect the person who plays best to win.
I don't want someone to win because he got lucky.

In a way, yeah. The best player in the world could have a bad game because the weather is awful leading a worse player to score better because there was no weather problems.

But, in golf, there's nothing you can do about weather. In StarCraft II, you can.

The difference isn't that big. Besides, what if a player that should have won lost because it came down to a few units and his units fired later.

    Rest In Peace, Old Friend.

Except the best player in the world is in a far better position to "weather" the bad chance than the good player; indeed one of the hallmarks of a great player is someone who can overcome so-called "impossible odds." Because that's one of the aspects of why sports are so popular, sometimes the Unexpected Happens.

I see you're still butthurt, btw. They have lotions for that ya'know

    According to who?

People win because of luck all the time. Where this idea that chance=bad got started, I have no clue. Besides, if your match is such that even a small amount of chance can make or break it, either your plan is crappy or your opponent is as equally skilled as you, in which case it'll come down to chance anyways.

Wait wait wait. On a professional level, I rarely see people winning because of luck. Give an example please. Even when I ladder, I rarely feel like I won cause I got lucky.

Also, we never talked about how big an amount of random elements you'd want to add to the game. If it's a pretty insignificant change, what's the point of even adding it?

It's better if there was a way to control slight upturns, than a flat out random delay.

Yeah, it's so small, but if I have 23 lings vs 23 lings and 60 percent of my lings attacked later than his, then I'm dead. Not because I made a mistake, but because there was no way to predict the delay or utilize it to my advantage.

Say if they made the delay occur only before a move/stop, then I can control my lings so that the opp would have a chance of getting the delay while I don't.

Oh, and I knew it! Marines sort of skip this delay when doing the move-stop thingy! Or do they?

I always noticed this in BW, particularly with zealots. I thought I was just imagining it, or it was just lag on my end.

I agree with Wankey on the Uncanny Valley aspect.

Just as a side question, is this delay present on the SCV's mining?

Then you watch incredibly boring sports.

Sports always has the luck factor, whether it was lucky shot, a lucky hit or a lucky pass. There is always luck in a sport. The randomness is small enough to be neglected but large enough to make things interesting without biasing games or completely throwing any sense of gameplay out the window.

You must be either full of yourself or something else.

You've never won because you got lucky?

You've NEVER accidentally found a hidden expo or scanned his base RIGHT after his spire or DT was finished. I've gotten so many advantages because of luck it isn't funny.

On a professional level people win because of luck ALL the time. Like that time when boxor saw the hidden gold expo of naniwa or whoever he was playing. There was HUGE anticipation whether or not he was close enough to see it and *LUCKILY* he was.

Starcraft isn't close to chess where both opponents know what's going on. It's more of a sport where human psychology and a bit of luck get put into play.

That's why a lot of SC2 players love poker, poker is a more analogue version of starcraft.
