Thread: How did they screw up the single player that bad?

Chris Metzen resting on laurels and letting other writers hammer out the script for one, or maybe Chris Metzen no having enough faith in his own abilities which still amounts to the same thing. Blizzard's only writer who knows how to write dialogue not writing anymore past "the Frozen Throne" in short, and having questionable judgment where others' writings are concerned (he did OK "Shadow of the Xel'Naga" and all the Richard Knaak books). And the general post-WoW disregard for story and continuity (no matter what they say).

This said with all due respect for Chris and Blizzard.

Unneeded sentiment that no one else here shares. You can breathe now.

No one else need share it. My post, my viewpoint. However, the constant cribbing of Star Wars fans about how much George Lucas sucks, for example, ultimately says much more about the fans than Lucas. And what it says isn't necessarily flattering.

Respect for the artwork entails respect for the artist, even if said artist goes on to do something you don't like (unless that something exposes him or her to be a truly terrible human being).

I know I may come off as overtly stiff or pedantic here, but civility is important, especially when criticising someone else.

You fail to acknowledge the fact that George Lucas actually does suck, though. The more control he's given over a project, the worse it is. This is evident as Star Wars started strong when Lucas did not have full control and had much help rewriting Star Wars, and has degraded over the years as Lucas has been given final say on projects.

I was being facetious, implying no one here has respect for Blizzard. I can't speak for everyone (as much as I wish I could). But it is evident to me, and subsequently agreed with by me, that most people consider Blizzard - and by extension Metzen - no longer worthy of the respect it once had. It sold out and since WoW has been going downhill rapidly.

I agree respect for a piece of art naturally correlates to a respect for the artist in some capacity. My issue is with you having respect for SC2 at all.

Honestly I did enjoy the campaigns and how it was set up but I mean they need to do something like Incredible like make raynor fail on his mission on char and its stupid how all the sudden raynor and artanis just randomly lost contact. I think that the voice acting on zeratul could have been 10x better. In sc1 he sounded like an old protoss warrior and in this one its like the protoss did some stemcell on him and he lost 200 years. The campaigns as i see it are pretty much set up as sc2 being the end of the starcraft universe.

Well, people worked hard on it and the game itself is by no means horrible (except for the writing and the story, and even much of that I suspect was ultimately done bona fide, in a real effeort to produce something worthwhile, just with a lot of stupid decisions along the way).

Regardless of the merits of the prequels (or lack thereof), Lucas did write AND direct the movies himself, which takes serious dedication and cojones. He could have easily rested on his millions and hired directors and screenwriters the way he usually does staying in the nebulous role of "Executive Producer" but he decided to work on the movies in the most hands on way possible. You may not like the result, but these movies are the vision of the same guy who made the first movie and by and large created Star Wars, they are not compromises and concessions to contracts, money or sloth. One thing for which I admire filmmakers like Cameron or writers like Stephen King (despite not necessarily liking all of Cameron's films and outright disliking most of King's novels) is that they write novels or make movies without financially needing to, they could've easily and happily lived off past successes and accumulated millions without creating a single new thing but they continue to work simply out of dedication for their craft, because they love what they're doing. Which is one of the best and most important qualities for an artist to have.

James Cameron is a perfectionist with great sense for detail and for me the best sci-fi movie director ever. I agree with Rob Pardo that Starcraft movie directed by James Cameron would be the perfect combination.

ZASZ to Kerrigan: "You dare threaten a Cerebrate? You will be the doom of us all!"
ARTANIS to Kerrigan: "Savor this victory, Kerrigan! For the Protoss will never forget your treachery. We shall be watching you."
RAYNOR to Kerrigan: "It may not be tomorrow, darlin'. It may not even happen with an army at my back. But rest assured: I'm the man who's going to kill you some day. I'll be seein' you."

DemoS, please tell me you're not one of those people who rolls around on forums where they repeatedly state how much they disrespect and dislike a game, and yet still hang around to participate in discussions about it.

Because that's basically trolling (unless I'm misinterpreting it, which is entirely possible), and I like you.

Don't get me wrong, I can understand stating what you dislike about a game or product and discussing how it can be improved, but if you outright say that you do not enjoy something at all, and you've already given it your best criticism, why bother hanging around talking to other people who (most likely) really enjoyed it, or at least find more positives than negatives?

I've fought for the Terran revolution, I've seen the promise of the Protoss, and now I'm ready to join the might of the Swarm...

I thought it was obvious I was troll. MUST TROLL HARDER!

Look, people are good at different things. Some dance, some sing, some gouge money from the elderly using ponzi schemes. My gift, is criticizing and nitpicking every little fault. If you can't find the problem, you can't fix the problem. I find problems, and I fix them.

I'm a superhero. Chew on that.

What problems have you actually fixed? It's extremely easy to be an armchair critic (1); it is much harder to actually conceptually fix the problem and then follow-through with the solution. Before you say that you aren't good at mapping or modding or whatever and that you're an idea man. Please refer to point one.
