Thread: How did they screw up the single player that bad?

There is a reddit post where you can view the single player of SC1 on youtube. I haven't played Sc1's single player since about 2003 and wow, how did they screw up the sequel?

Just playing the Terran campaign on youtube, there are like 8 completely multidimensional characters, such an interesting universe. The dialogue is so much more advanced and better written.

SC1 single player is akeen to Game of Thrones style dialogue. I wouldn't be surprised one if the Game of Thrones writer worked on SC1. Just watching the beginning of the video you can tell, even Kerrigan's right hand doesn't really believe Kerrigan is doing the right thing. They have a report where they are both trying to to the best.

Whereas in SC2, everyone on board the fucking Hyperion is a robot and a yes man to Raynor.

You present things in new and miraculous ways which inspire to think about things in ways I never thought before.

Seriously though, Raynor was the Captain of everyone you talked to on the ship. Of course they're "Yes Men." Raynor isn't your high school teacher. As for being robots, not really. There just wasn't any heated dialogue.

Well there was the bar fight & disagreement towards the end of the tychus missions, but that's basically it.

I mainly don't like how you're an invincible force throughout the campaign. Not once did I feel like I was under threat or could lose the mission. HoTS will probably just be us steamrolling everyone who gets in our way again, especially the weakling SC2-style protoss cowards.

The Char missions are the only ones where I felt like I could lose, but that's because the odds were supposed to be impossible. I bought the fact that they worked their asses off and suffered heavy casualties just to establish a pathetic landing site, but then they go back in space for the Shatter the Sky mission, or spend some time dicking around in caves for Belly of the Beast. And then the entire swarm gets recalled to Char in a newscast, but they still win. Meh. Would also have been nice for the newscasts themselves not to be a joke. We've got this epic char atmosphere set up for the final missions, and the newscast is:

"While the nature of his abrupt mental breakdown remains unknown, we do know that he was clad only in his socks and rumored to be in possession of Emperor Mengsk's manifesto and a pound of peanut butter."

    Awesome.

Yeah seriously, in Starcraft 1, the final mission was a combined force of Terran and Protoss. That's how epic it was. The final mission in SC2 was a gimmick mini game where you had to use some weird nova device as a get out of jail free card.

It's clear to see where Blizzard has lost talent, and that's in the story telling department, as they've gained a bunch of game play designers but no actual mission designers.

Plus I'm quite sure the company is now a yes man hierarchy smilar to George Lucas' deal with Phantom Menace. I mean who is going to question the leaders who made Starcraft? Nobody.

I had a thought about this last night, and it was focused primarily on the scene where raynor rescues warfield.

I thought, the story much in the same way, displayed this flaw. There's just not enough focus, exposition, or the "setup, revelation, conflict, resolution" that a story must be meaty with one step to the next from act 1 to 3.

OMFG, I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw his post.

I did the whole "Deal with it" a lot in Mass Effect 2. Made me think of that.

I have to admit, I found the dialogue more intriguing and interesting than in the sequel, but I still highly enjoyed the sequel and am desperately anticipating its expansions.
I've fought for the Terran revolution, I've seen the promise of the Protoss, and now I'm ready to join the might of the Swarm...
