Why Duran sided with Kerrigan during Brood War? She's a big problem to his master, the Dark Voice, so why he helped her to win many battles during the Brood War. Why he didn't kill her, when he had a chance (an agent of the Dark Voice should be very powerful, more than any Protoss or Zerg)

Though I don't suspect Blizzard has an explanation that will wind up making much sense, so theorycrafting is pretty useless. :/


PS: The theory is that Duran stole Kerrigan's research notes for how to create hybridized beings (such as herself). And then when he was done, he left Kerrigan.

In addition, the Dark Voice wants to take over the Swarm and use them against the other races. I don't think the UED's intrusion helped with that plan, as it weakened the Swarm. Although one wonders if the Second Overmind would have been under the Dark Voice's control too.

One wonders if Kerrigan will even mention Duran in Heart of the Swarm. Maybe she'll have forgotten him, and will get a rude reminder.

You have to think about the timing of Duran's presence. When we first see Duran, he sides with the UED in taking out the Dominion, who was the dominant force at the time with the Protoss homeworld in shambles. I'm still unsure if Duran was an independent agent at this time. Although he did try to destroy the Psi Disrupter, his actions did ultimately result in the UED taking over the second overmind.

One thing to bear in mind is that Duran's experiments were far from complete, if they had even been started yet. That's why Duran needed Kerrigan to survive. He needed the Zerg swarm to survive until the Hybrids could be born. There's no telling what would eventually happen to the Zerg in the hands of the UED, and if there were no other leader, they would've been picked off, brood by brood, by the Dominion and the Protoss. And the Zerg were needed for the Dark Voice's plans to be accomplished.

That confuses me. The advice that Duran provided was pretty limited. He did secure the Disrupter, but that was after convincing DuGalle to destroy it.

I think he served the zerg (rather than Kerrigan), but only in the short term. It is a bit strange, in retrospect, that he wouldn't have just backed a second Overmind. He could have made a fantastic adviser for it. (In fact, I could picture him doing that for a brood mother late in Heart of the Swarm.)

He gave some help so that the UED could overcome the Dominion on Braxis and at the Dylarian Shipyards, but otherwise his actions involved inciting the destruction of the Disrupter, enabling Arcturus Mengsk's escape on Aiur, turning the UED leaders against one another, assassinating Stukov and attempting to destroy the Disrupter.

Since the second overmind was made up of the cerebrates of the original overmind, it can be assumed that this new overmind would still be influenced by the Dark Voice's directives. However, since the UED Captain's forces prevented the Psi Disruptor's destruction and captured the overmind, Duran's plan changed; siding with Kerrigan. The second overmind was killed, and the UED defeated. Now he just had slip away from Kerrigan's notice, which wasn't very difficult for him, and he was free to continue his experiments. Kerrigan wasn't a problem, because Duran already had a plan in place, or found one, to remove her from power (see WoL).
