You should read the back of a novel before buying. I thought the whole thing about them being outlaws was kind of obvious.

I agree, the combat scenes could have been better. But bigger? That wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense.
I did read the cover before buying. I even posted my suspicions on this being another novel where there's going to be little to no combat back in an older thread.

It would certainly have been possible to get in bigger battles. Just because they're outlaws doesn't mean there can't be any major battles. Take the heaven's devils lost transmissions thing posted on the Starcraft II website as an example. The stuff on Haji certainly sounded like Raynor and Tychus getting mixed up in some pretty heavy duty combat even if they didn't have an army at their side.

But in this novel there's pretty much nothing. We don't even get to see any combat armor except for that special issue armor that was featured for all of five seconds at the end of the novel. We don't really get to see any "unit" from the game except vultures, and they seemed to be civilian issue.

    A new novel already? Awesome.

Too bad WoL has made it so I don't care as much about the story. Hopefully HOTS and Void can renew my interest.

You want another "Shadow of the Xel'Naga"?

Oh sweet merciful God, no! Anything but that.

I think I, Mengsk, Speed of Darkness and Heaven's Devils had a decent plot to combat ratio, so to speak.

Ah. Yeah, I, Mengsk was pretty good when it came to mixing plot and combat.

Ok, so Raynor has a westerny feeling to him, and the UED expedition in BW really were into classicism, but I really would love to see something more modern and advanced with Terrans, like in Halo, Mass Effect, Starship Troopers, and Aliens. I'm not sure I like how they made the Dominion all classic with so many references to colonial US. The Confederate flag in SC1 was enough IMO.

But I do like the higher tech feeling of SC2's Terran units. (Siege Tank, Thor, Nomad, Diamondback, etc.)

With that said, I managed to get the novel while I was away in NYC last week. Haven't even started the 1st one, but I'm definitely intrigued by Raynor's and Tychus' past.
Yeah space western is really limited in creative potential. It doesn't hurt to include - but to flanderize a franchise on the theme would be very silly.

Space western occured in firefly, and that's where it ended - I hope.

To me - I think the terran in starcraft would do well by retaining a mix of aliens and the fall out franchise themes - only one planet would be 'modern', but in a sort of european way (exotic and obscure where the media gets to the citizen in their urbclave right away; in other words, korhal).

Atom punk seems like a great theme to be incorporated into starcraft. Pretty much everything seems to be nuclear powered anyway - powered armor, battlecruisers, nukes, etc.

Starcraft terran is too 'rusty' to be themed on unsc halo, alliance ME, or FoP startrek.
