Thread: Lore/Voice Actor Panel

I said all I have to say on the issue in another thread (and the gist of it is that I'm not happy with this move of Blizzard's at all, I think that this is the worst mistake Blizzard has done to date on any of their games, on both aesthetic and ethical levels), but I have to add that in the worst-case scenario (that is, if they don't bring Glynnis back) which at the moment sadly enough seems to be the likeliest, I would at least very much like to hear an explanation for why they did this, since at the moment there is no indication whatsoever for one existing.

And why is it a mistake? It's a mistake just because Blizzard doesn't listen to every single thing the fans cry about?

I like the Battlestar girl's voice. It's deep, lusty, and throaty. Kerrigan never really had a dsitinct voice that stood out as unique to me, so I'm not really hurt over this change at all.

Honestly, I could give a damn about Glynnis Talken as far as the voice of Queen Bitch of the Universe Kerrigan is concerned. Helfer's played a character at least somewhat akin to Kerrigan all through BSG; I'm sure she can handle it. Lots of filters and crap on that voice anyways.

Only thing I might miss is the original Kerrigan's voice during stuff like the New Gettysburg flashback; Ghost Kerrigan's voice really was distinctive, and I hope Tricia Helfer can hit it.

Because it's the first time I've encountered them doing something so detrimental to a game of theirs. You may not care about it all that much but it's an issue that I happen to feel strongly about, so it's not "every single thing", it's THIS particular issue and it's quite important, at least in my opinion. If you've read enough of my previous posts you'd probably know I'm usually not the sort to complain, of course I may happily criticise a game mechanic or say that I don't particularly like a specific visual design, but all in all I'm 100 % supportive of everything Blizzard is doing and I greatly appreciate and respect all the effort and work going into the game. This however is an exception: it's not something that people put a lot of effort or work into, it's not a mechanic or a model or a script, it's a decision, and in the light of everything I know a bad one, and one concerning something I happen to deeply care about to boot (the story). If you want an actual explanation as to why in my opinion it's a mistake, you'd be best advised to read my previous posts (writing it all down here would probably be repeating myself one time too many).

We don't know that Ms. Helfer's voice is going to be a negative quality yet. Calling it detrimental is kind of hasty; for all we know, Glynnis can't accurately portray the character anymore after ten years. Anyways, like I said, at least give Tricia Helfer a chance. It can't hurt.

Okay, so I don't really have a lot invested in this debate so I haven't been keeping close track of all the details. So some questions for those who know:

People are saying that we've heard Glynnis in some SC2 materials (trailers) - which ones? Was she the original voice for the "Old Rivals" clip, in which case that's like one sentence, not much to go on. Or was she the "voice of the zerg" in the zerg reveal? Because I remember lots of posts with people complaining about that voice.

Similarly, what have we heard of Tricia Helfer? Did they re-release the "old rivals" trailer with a new voice? Is there anything else with her as Kerrigan?

It seems to me that the people here are immediately jumping to "I hate it!" just because of a few voice samples and because it's not what we expected. Glynnis has already done and knows the character very well. Of course she's going to sound better in the little snippets of hastily put together dialogue we've heard. That's also a good reason to keep her but it's also a good reason not to compare the two voice actors just yet.

Yes, she appears in the Old Rivals trailer from BlizzCon 2008, as well as voicing a storyboard for a cinematic of Kerrigan being abandoned to the Zerg.

The voice in the Zerg Reveal is a Blizzard employee playing a Zerg Queen.

Tricia Helfer is apparently Kerrigan's voice in the new Old Rivals trailer released on the net recently.

    I agree with this.
